A drunken driver launched a vicious, unprovoked assault on a car wash employee near Hull, hurling racist abuse and threats during the incident. The attacker, Matthew Jones from South Street in Cottingham, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and racially aggravated fear or provocation of violence, which occurred on July 20 last year.

The Violent Confrontation

The car wash worker sat in his vehicle to escape heavy rain and a lull in customers. Jones pulled up dangerously close behind, stumbled out of his car, and began pounding on the window while screaming obscenities. Detectable alcohol breath fueled his rage as he confronted the employee upon exiting the vehicle.

Jones grabbed the worker’s clothing, yanked him forward, and unleashed a torrent of racial slurs. A struggle broke out, with the victim trying to retreat. He defended himself by hurling small metal steps at Jones. Fellow employees rushed to intervene, but Jones continued his tirade, shouting: “I’ve had enough of you f****** foreigners coming here. F*** you. Come over here. I will knock you out. Come and hit me, you little s***.”

The entire episode unfolded on CCTV footage. As the victim dialed police, Jones fled in his car only to return moments later on foot, resuming his verbal assault. Officers arrived swiftly, arresting him on the scene.

Court Hearing and Sentencing

Claire Holmes, prosecuting at Grimsby Crown Court, detailed the events. During police questioning, Jones dismissed his comments as “an observation,” denying racist intent.

Jones faced a separate conviction that July at magistrates’ court for drink-driving. His record includes five prior offenses. Oliver Shipley, defending, highlighted Jones’s early guilty pleas and light conviction history.

Judge Gurdial Singh condemned the behavior: “You behaved disgracefully. He was doing nothing wrong and you launched into him.” The judge labeled it a deliberate attempt to demean and insult, noting Jones used the terms as abuse. “I am going to give you one chance and one chance only,” he added.

The court imposed 250 hours of unpaid work, an alcohol treatment program, and 10 days of rehabilitation activity.
