Kitchens serve as the heart of many homes, with designs ranging from neutral palettes to bold statements. However, specific elements can quickly make the space appear tacky and inexpensive. Interior decorator Penny Modern emphasizes that achieving an upscale appearance often involves eliminating certain items rather than adding new ones.

1. Exposed Trash Bins

Visible trash bins top the list of common pitfalls in kitchens. Even the sleekest designs draw unwanted attention to waste. Penny Modern notes, “Nothing cheapens a beautiful kitchen more than a dirty, grimy trash can sitting off in the corner.” An exposed bin creates clutter, evokes unpleasant reminders, and can introduce odors.

To counter this, integrate hidden bins into cabinets for a seamless look. Alternatively, select a stainless steel model and position it discreetly to minimize visibility.

2. Hanging Pot Racks

Pot racks offer practical storage for pots and pans, especially in space-limited kitchens. Yet, they often result in a cluttered, chaotic display that diminishes the room’s appeal. Penny Modern explains that mismatched or non-uniform cookware on racks looks inexpensive, blocks sightlines, makes the space feel smaller, and attracts dust and grease.

Opt for drawer dividers to store items horizontally in deep cabinets. In tight quarters, using the oven as temporary storage serves as a viable option.

3. Decor atop Cabinets

Cabinets not reaching the ceiling tempt many to fill the gap with photos, wine bottles, or faux plants. This practice clutters the area, shrinks the perceived size, and cheapens the overall aesthetic. Penny Modern warns that such displays distract the eye and disrupt visual flow.

The simplest fix involves clearing the space entirely to embrace clean, negative space above the cabinets.

4. Word Art Signs

Phrases like “Kitchen” or “Eat, Pray, Love” on mass-produced signs clutter surfaces and lend a generic feel. Penny Modern states they fail to charm and detract from luxury.

Replace them with genuine artwork, such as travel-inspired landscapes. Affordable options abound on platforms like Etsy or through small-scale prints.

5. Mismatched Appliance Finishes

A patchwork of appliance colors—such as a white dishwasher, black fridge, and stainless steel stove—creates a disjointed, bargain-bin vibe. Penny Modern advises against this mishmash, recommending panel-ready appliances that blend seamlessly with cabinetry, a hallmark of high-end designs.
