Mel B Celebrates 51st Birthday with Heartfelt Tributes
Singer Mel B marked her 51st birthday on Friday, receiving a wave of affectionate messages from friends, family, and notably, her fellow Spice Girls. Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, and Melanie Chisholm all shared public tributes, sending well wishes to the star as she entered a new decade.
Surprise Well Wishes from Geri Horner
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, Geri Horner also extended her birthday wishes to Mel B. This gesture may have come as a pleasant surprise to fans, given concerns about the pair’s relationship following Horner’s absence from Mel B’s wedding last July. While Horner reportedly sent flowers, her non-attendance at the ceremonies held in both the UK and Marrakech had been a point of discussion.
Birthday Tinge of Sadness Amidst Fond Memories
The birthday celebrations were underscored by a poignant reminder of personal loss, as Mel B’s birthday falls just one day after that of her beloved late father, Martin Brown. He would have been 72 on May 28. Martin Brown passed away in 2017 after a five-year battle with cancer.
Expressing her gratitude, Mel B shared a heartfelt message with her supporters: “Feeling very grateful today coz I’ve had some of the most memorable birthdays honestly and it’s ALL thanks to YOU LOT!!!” The singer posted a collection of messages from her celebrity peers, along with tributes from her daughter Phoenix, 27, and husband Rory McPhee, whom she married last year.
A Promise Fulfilled: MBE Recognition and Father’s Strength
In 2022, Mel B shared a touching account of visiting her late father’s grave to inform him of her MBE award in the New Year Honours list. The singer, recognized for her services to domestic violence victims, revealed that she had promised her father on his deathbed that she would leave her abusive marriage. She expressed belief that he would be immensely proud of her charity work receiving such recognition.
Martin Brown died in March 2017 at the age of 63 following a battle with myeloma cancer. Shortly after his passing, Mel B separated from her husband, Stephen Belafonte, and later spoke out about alleged abuse, claims that Belafonte has consistently denied.
Recounting the emotional moment, Mel B stated, “This was the moment I told my dad about my MBE. On his death bed I promised him I would leave my abusive marriage. He gave me that strength.” She described how, after being given only days to live due to his cancer, she made a hurried trip from Los Angeles to be with her father in his final moments, accompanied by her daughter and sister.
Mel B recalled telling her father about her plans to end her marriage. “I told him I was leaving Stephen and I felt his hand tighten slightly in mine,” she remembered. In a deeply emotional reflection, she described their final exchange: “I leaned over him. ‘Dad. You’ve had your hair cut and a shave. You’ve got a fresh shirt on. We have prayed. We are ready. You are ready. But I can’t start my divorce until you die.'” She then recounted, “His eyes opened for a second, we looked at each other, and there was a moment in which I felt every ounce of pain that had ever passed between us disappear. Then he took one last, very slow breath. ‘He’s gone,’ I announced to the room.”
This cathartic moment spurred Mel B to initiate divorce proceedings, fulfilling a promise to her father. She returned to Los Angeles, secured new accommodation, hired a divorce lawyer, and filed a restraining order against her husband. The divorce was finalized on December 15, 2017.
