Defence Guru Shaun Edwards Poised for Surprise French Departure
The availability of highly-decorated defence coach Shaun Edwards is causing a stir among the world’s leading rugby nations, with just over a year remaining until the next Rugby World Cup. Edwards, whose current contract with the French national team extends to 2028, is reportedly set to leave his position as assistant coach to Fabien Galthie, according to domestic reports.
Edwards joined the French setup in 2020, having previously served with the Welsh national team. During his coaching career, he has amassed an impressive seven Six Nations titles, including four Grand Slams, across his tenures with both Wales and France. His exceptional track record suggests that if he does indeed depart the French camp in the near future, he will not be short of offers from other interested parties.
England’s Longstanding Interest
For years, Shaun Edwards has been frequently linked with a coaching role for England. Despite discussions between Edwards and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) occurring periodically, most recently in 2022, he has never been formally employed by the RFU.
Currently, England’s head coach Steve Borthwick has Richard Wigglesworth, Joe El-Abd, and Byron McGuigan as part of his coaching staff, all of whom specialize in defence. This configuration means there isn’t an obvious immediate opening for Edwards at Twickenham.
French Media Reports on Succession
French publication L’Equipe has reported on Edwards’ likely departure, suggesting that Gerald Bastide is being considered as his replacement.
Worcester Warriors Secure Championship Title
In unrelated news, Worcester Warriors have clinched the Championship title after defeating Bedford 27-14. This victory, secured less than four years after the club entered administration and withdrew from the top-tier Premiership, marks a significant achievement. While this win does not grant them immediate promotion to the Premiership, it aligns with the club’s long-term aspirations.
