Acquittal in Fatal Queensland Pub Incident

A Brisbane electrician has been found not guilty of all charges in connection with the death of Lincoln Hoad, 32, following an incident outside a country Queensland pub in September 2023. The verdict was delivered by a Supreme Court jury on Thursday afternoon.

Trial Details and Verdict

The four-day trial in Toowoomba’s Supreme Court heard that Mr. Hoad sustained fatal injuries after being punched by Maua Lagaaia, 36, and subsequently falling to the ground. CCTV footage presented to the jury showed the brief altercation, which lasted approximately six seconds, occurring at the Australian Hotel in Dalby. Forensic pathologist Dr. Nathan Milne testified that while the punch itself was of moderate force, the critical injury resulted from Mr. Hoad’s head striking the ground, leading to severe brain trauma.

Mr. Lagaaia’s defence barrister argued that his client acted in self-defence, emphasizing that individuals in such high-pressure situations are not expected to make perfect decisions. The prosecution had characterized Mr. Lagaaia as a “drunken buffoon” who acted aggressively, while the defence portrayed him as a “friendly, jovial” individual.

Despite differing accounts of the events leading up to the punch, it was accepted that Mr. Lagaaia delivered the blow that proved fatal. The charge of unlawful striking causing death, introduced in Queensland in 2014 to address one-punch fatalities, was the focus of the proceedings.

Victim’s Family Expresses Disappointment

Following the verdict, Lincoln Hoad’s family and longtime partner, Shalika Low, expressed their profound disappointment. Ms. Low, who had been with Mr. Hoad for 13 years, shared that he had been planning to propose to her. She recounted that he was in excellent spirits the day before his death and had mentioned buying a ring the following week.

Mr. Hoad was taken off life support on September 17, 2023, and his organs were donated. Ms. Low described their relationship as “vibrant and full of promise” and spoke of the immense loss she feels, missing his “insight, his wit, his huge smile, his warm embrace.” She stated that nearly 1,500 people attended his funeral, highlighting his popularity within the community.

Maua Lagaaia, having been cleared of all charges, was released from the dock and reunited with his family and friends.
