Tragic Loss of Navy Personnel in Devon Helicopter Crash
Three Royal Navy crew members have been identified following a fatal helicopter crash in Devon. Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, and Petty Officer Owen Green perished when a Merlin Mk4 helicopter went down in a field on Wednesday.
Local residents have commended the crew, describing them as ‘heroes’ for their actions during the incident. It is reported that the pilots deliberately avoided populated areas, including nearby homes and a Travelodge hotel, potentially saving lives.
Britain’s Only Female Royal Navy Commando Among Fallen
Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, 31, was recognized as Britain’s only serving female Royal Navy Commando, an accomplishment that had previously received commendation from NATO. Her diverse talents extended beyond her military career; she also appeared on the ITV programs ‘Take Me Out’ and ‘Ninja Warrior UK’.
Witness accounts suggest the helicopter was flying at a significantly low altitude before it crashed and exploded. Aerial imagery from the crash site at Sourton Cross depicts scattered debris across the field.
A Life Dedicated to Service and Achievement
Originally from Surrey, Lieutenant Fisher graduated from Imperial College London in 2016 with a degree in geology. Her pre-military career included a two-year stint as an exploration geologist for BP before she joined the Royal Navy approximately a year later. Demonstrating exceptional athleticism, she represented Great Britain in the European Age Group Triathlon Championships in 2021.
Her demanding military journey included a successful completion of the 16-week All Arms Commando Course, a rigorous program undertaken by very few women, which led to her unique designation as the UK’s sole female Royal Navy Commando.
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
Lieutenant Fisher’s family released a statement describing her as an ‘extraordinary woman’ and highlighting her vibrant spirit. ‘To say she was full of life is an understatement: she took every opportunity to push her limits, achieve more, and bring out the best in those around her,’ they shared. ‘We are so proud of everything she accomplished. She has left an immeasurable hole in our lives, and in all the lives she has touched and inspired.’ The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Official Condolences and Investigation Underway
The head of the Navy expressed profound sadness over the loss of the three crew members. ‘I am deeply saddened to share the news that three crew members onboard a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter have died after it crashed in the early hours of this morning near Sourton, Devon,’ he stated. ‘I know this will come as a huge shock to all in our Naval community, and my deepest condolences go out to the families, friends and loved ones impacted by this tragedy.’ He also extended thanks to the emergency services who responded to the incident.
The King has been briefed on the crash and intends to send private letters to the families. The Princess of Wales, in her capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm, shared her sorrow online: ‘I was so saddened to hear of the tragic loss of three service personnel from the Fleet Air Arm following a helicopter training exercise last night. William and I hold their families and friends in our hearts at this very difficult time.’
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the families of the deceased personnel have been notified. Defence Secretary John Healey conveyed his devastation, stating that the personnel ‘served with excellence and will be much missed.’ An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently in progress.
