A growing number of parents are scrutinizing the ingredients in their children’s toothpaste following a class action lawsuit alleging concerning levels of heavy metals in a popular brand. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New York, claims that certain Hello Products toothpastes, marketed as safe and natural, contain significant amounts of lead and mercury.
Parental Concerns Sparked by Lawsuit Allegations
For many parents, selecting products for their children involves meticulous label reading and a constant effort to navigate a world filled with warnings about potential health risks. The appeal of brands that promise natural ingredients and child-friendly formulations can be a significant draw, offering a sense of relief amidst these anxieties.
However, a recent lawsuit has cast a shadow of doubt over these assurances. Hello Products, the company behind the Hello Kids toothpaste line, is facing allegations that some of its products contain ‘alarmingly high’ levels of heavy metals, including lead and mercury. These claims are particularly unsettling for parents who specifically chose the brand as a safer alternative to conventional options.
Investigation Findings and Legal Action
The lawsuit stems from an investigation conducted by the consumer safety group Lead Safe Mama. This group tested several children’s toothpastes for heavy metal content, publishing their findings in 2025. Among the products examined were Hello Kids Dragon Dazzle Toothpaste and Hello Kids Fluoride Free Toothpaste Fresh Watermelon.
According to the study cited in the legal filing, Hello Kids Fluoride Free Toothpaste reportedly contained 493 parts per billion (ppb) of lead and 19ppb of mercury. Hello Kids Dragon Dazzle Fluoride Toothpaste was also reported to contain 428.4ppb of lead and 11.8ppb of mercury.
The plaintiff in the class action, Damany Browne, alleges that Hello Products failed to adequately warn consumers about the potential presence of these heavy metals, leading them to believe the toothpaste was entirely safe and free from harmful substances. The lawsuit seeks to represent over 100 consumers and is seeking more than $5 million in damages.
Regulatory Standards and Parental Perceptions
While the reported levels of lead are below the limits currently permitted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for toothpaste – up to 10,000ppb for fluoride-free and 20,000ppb for fluoride toothpaste – critics point to a stark comparison. The FDA caps lead in candies commonly consumed by children at 100ppb. By this measure, the levels detected in the toothpaste are nearly five times higher than what is allowed in foods marketed to children.
Furthermore, the lawsuit notes that the alleged levels exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s maximum contaminant levels for drinking water, which are set at 15ppb for lead and 2ppb for mercury.
Health experts, including those at the FDA and pediatric organizations, emphasize that there is no safe level of lead exposure for children. However, officials state that the actual health risk from brushing with the toothpaste depends on factors such as the amount ingested and the frequency of use, as toothpaste is not intended to be swallowed.
Trust and Transparency in Product Choices
The core of the concern for many parents lies not just in the detected amounts, but in the alleged presence of any measurable lead or mercury in products explicitly marketed as natural and child-friendly. The daily use of toothpaste, and the potential for small amounts to be swallowed by young children still learning to brush effectively, adds another layer of concern.
The marketing of Hello Products, which emphasizes “delicious, natural flavors” and a commitment to creating “a happier world with more smiles,” resonated with parents seeking the healthiest options. The unsettling claim that some competing children’s toothpastes tested by Lead Safe Mama showed non-detectable levels of lead and mercury raises questions about industry standards and transparency.
In the wake of these allegations, many parents are finding themselves scrutinizing labels even more closely, seeking products that demonstrate rigorous testing and clear communication. The desire for peace of mind regarding their children’s health can lead to increased spending on products perceived as safer, highlighting the significant value parents place on trust and confidence in the items they purchase for their families.
