Israel Launches New Strikes on Iran Amidst Regional Tensions

Israel has initiated a fresh wave of strikes targeting Iranian military installations, occurring shortly after a direct warning from President Trump urging against retaliation. Explosions were reportedly heard across Iran as the Israeli Defense Forces carried out attacks on sites in the western and central parts of the country. These developments follow a series of missile exchanges between Iran and Israel.

President Trump’s Appeal for De-escalation

President Trump reportedly contacted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing the need to avoid further escalation. According to reports detailing a conversation with Barak Ravid, an Axios journalist, Trump stated, “I am going to call Bibi [Netanyahu] right now and tell him not to retaliate.” He further cautioned that continued strikes would perpetuate a cycle of conflict, remarking, “If Bibi strikes them back, it’s just gonna keep going like the last 47 years, or the last 3,000 years.”

The President had previously called for an end to hostilities from both sides following Israeli strikes over the weekend on Beirut and subsequent Iranian actions targeting northern Israel. “Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one,” Trump commented, expressing a desire to facilitate a peace agreement with Iran.

Escalation Follows Ceasefire Talks

These latest actions come just days after Lebanese and Israeli governments had reportedly agreed to a ceasefire brokered through U.S.-hosted talks. Tehran had previously signaled its intent to retaliate after Israel conducted a strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut. Lebanon’s health ministry reported that the strike on a residential building resulted in two fatalities and twenty injuries.

The Israeli military indicated that it would respond to the recent Iranian attack, while Iran has vowed a more forceful response. Senior Iranian parliamentary member Ebrahim Rezaei had issued a statement on X, saying, “Watch the sky of the occupied territories tonight.” Iran’s parliament speaker also stated, “The (U.S) naval blockade imposed against the Iranian people, together with Washington’s green light today to the Zionist regime, makes U.S and Israeli bases and assets in the region legitimate targets.”

IDF Prepared for Further Exchanges

Brigadier General Effie Defrin, a spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), confirmed that Israel is “prepared for the possibility of additional fire.” He added that air defense systems are deployed nationwide and that the military’s chief of general staff is conducting a “situational assessment.” The IDF stated its intention to “continue to operate throughout Lebanon and will deepen the blow to the Hezbollah terrorist organisation.” Defrin had earlier described the Iranian regime’s actions as a “grave mistake.”

An Iranian military statement on Sunday asserted, “Our acceptance of the ceasefire on April 8 was conditional on a ceasefire on ALL fronts; but as always, America and Israel did not adhere to their commitment, they continued the aggression and crimes in Lebanon, and attacked Iranian vessels.” The office of Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that the IDF strike on Beirut was in response to missile fire from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group towards northern Israel earlier that day, claiming Israel targeted “command centres.”

U.S. Official Response and Peace Deal Concerns

A senior U.S. official, speaking anonymously, expressed that the U.S. was “not surprised” by the attack in Beirut but did not confirm if the U.S. had prior knowledge of the strike. President Trump had previously told Fox News that he was “not happy” about the Israeli attack on Lebanon.

Prime Minister Netanyahu, aiming to neutralize Hezbollah as a threat, reportedly told his cabinet, “We are striking them very hard, and we know that Hezbollah is on the run.” The IDF stated that “steps were taken to mitigate harm to civilians” during its operations.

Background of Recent Conflicts

Hezbollah had not immediately claimed responsibility for firing at Israel earlier in the day. Israel had announced its intention to strike southern suburbs the previous Monday after Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks in northern Israel. However, urgent talks mediated by Washington had reportedly halted these specific attacks, contingent on Hezbollah ceasing fire on Israeli border towns. Lebanon and Israel subsequently renewed a ceasefire agreement, a development Beirut hoped would lead to an end in hostilities.

An initial agreement took effect on April 17, following a significant Israeli bombardment of Beirut that resulted in over 300 fatalities. Israel conducted further strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs after this deal. Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon have continued daily, and Israeli forces have occupied approximately one-fifth of Lebanese territory through a ground invasion. Prime Minister Netanyahu, facing elections this year, has indicated a desire to continue Israel’s offensive until Hezbollah is no longer perceived as a threat. Hezbollah has reportedly rejected a U.S.-brokered deal and urged Lebanon to cease direct talks with Israel, instead supporting Iran’s condition for a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of broader negotiations with the U.S.

Economic and Humanitarian Implications

The ongoing conflict poses a threat to efforts aimed at ending the broader conflict involving Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil, gas, and related products. Disruptions to this waterway have significantly impacted the global economy and raised concerns about food security in vulnerable regions.

In a televised interview, President Trump expressed a desire for “Lebanon to have a better life” and called for “a more surgical attack on Hezbollah.” He indicated he was “not demanding” Lebanon’s inclusion in a short-term deal to extend the ceasefire in the conflict with Iran.

Since the conflict began on March 2, following Hezbollah’s rocket fire into northern Israel, more than 3,500 people have been killed in Lebanon. The conflict, which started two days after Israel and the U.S. began operations against Iran, has displaced over one million people in Lebanon. At least 31 Israeli soldiers and three civilians have also lost their lives.

Lebanese Army Commander General Rodolphe Haikal visited Pakistan on Saturday at the invitation of Pakistan’s army chief, who has been involved in mediating talks between the U.S. and Iran. The Lebanese army has not specified whether this visit is related to mediation efforts.
