Duchess of Sussex Posts Intimate Photos with Friend’s Baby

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has shared new photographs of herself with her close friend Kelly McKee Zajfen’s newborn son on Instagram. The posts were made just hours before the Royal Family’s annual Trooping the Colour ceremony. Markle, who resides in Montecito, California, with Prince Harry and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, has not appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony since 2019.

A Different Approach to Social Media Sharing

In a series of Instagram Stories released ahead of the King’s official birthday celebrations, Markle posted an image embracing baby Jack Oliver Zajfen, the son of Alliance of Moms co-founder Kelly McKee Zajfen. Unlike her usual practice of obscuring her own children’s faces in social media posts, Markle displayed the newborn’s features. She captioned the image, “We know I love a redhead,” humorously adding, “And let me stop you before they start, no it’s not his baby.” A second photo showed Markle with her friend Kelly, who had announced her pregnancy in November last year, following the tragic loss of her nine-year-old son in July 2022 due to a viral illness.

Defending Privacy Amidst Public Scrutiny

Earlier this month, the Duchess addressed criticism regarding her social media practices, particularly after sharing new photos of her daughter Lilibet for her fifth birthday. The post, captioned “our dream girl,” offered a clear image of Lilibet, prompting Markle, through her spokesperson, to reiterate her commitment to protecting her daughter’s privacy while sharing significant family moments. This followed accusations of hypocrisy when an image of Lilibet was shared shortly before Markle’s trip to Geneva to speak about the dangers of social media for children.

A representative for the Duchess stated, “The Duchess has always been clear that there is a distinction between sharing moments from her life and exposing her children to public scrutiny. By obscuring their faces, she is demonstrating the very principle she advocates for: giving children privacy, agency and protection in an increasingly digital world.”

Expert Opinions on Markle’s Social Media Strategy

However, these explanations have not swayed all observers. Brand expert Nick Ede commented on the situation, suggesting a perceived inconsistency. “She can commercialize her social media, obviously as an adult, but it just felt very hypocritical,” Ede noted. “This is still the huge problem with Meghan, it is the whole identity crisis. One minute she’s a savior, allegedly, of all children who’ve unfortunately lost their lives through social media and the next minute she’s a social media influencer. So what are you?”

Friendship and Support Through Grief

The backdrop to these shared photos is the deep friendship between Markle and Kelly McKee Zajfen, which has spanned two decades. Kelly has openly spoken about the profound support she received from Markle during her bereavement. She described the loss of her son George, who died from Covid and viral meningitis, as “traumatic, painful, and very vivid.” In a personal essay, Kelly recounted the swiftness of her son’s passing, expressing the immense difficulty of navigating such grief.

Markle and Prince Harry demonstrated their support for the Zajfen family by donating $5,000 to a GoFundMe established in George’s honor, with the donation attributed to their children, Archie and Lilibet. Kelly expressed her gratitude on Instagram, calling Harry and Meghan a “guiding light” and praising their friendship and the work of The Archewell Foundation.

In the years following George’s death, Markle and Prince Harry have actively participated in several of Kelly’s memorial charity events, including a tennis tournament held around Prince Harry’s 40th birthday.
