Ancient Artwork Offers Glimpse into Early Christianity

Archaeologists have unearthed a significant discovery in a subterranean tomb near Iznik, historically known as Nicaea, in northwestern Türkiye. The find includes what is being hailed as the most exceptionally preserved image of Jesus Christ discovered to date. The artwork depicts a youthful Jesus, fashioned with Roman characteristics, in his role as the “Good Shepherd.”

This region, Nicaea, holds historical importance as the birthplace of the Nicene Creed, a foundational document in early Christianity formulated in AD 325 when the area was part of the Roman Empire. During this era, Christians faced considerable persecution, making the cave artwork a valuable insight into their lives and customs during this challenging period.

The ‘Good Shepherd’ Imagery

The “Good Shepherd” artwork showcases a clean-shaven Jesus clad in a toga, carrying a goat on his shoulders. The goat’s head is turned towards Jesus’ left, while four additional goats are depicted at his feet, wandering amongst stylized flowers and vegetation. Researchers note this portrayal is an uncommon example in Anatolia (modern-day Türkiye) where Jesus is depicted with distinctly Roman features.

While the cross is now the most universally recognized symbol of Christianity, the “Good Shepherd” imagery predates it as a powerful visual communicator of faith, representing salvation, divine guidance, and protection.

Context of the Discovery

The cave painting was initially uncovered in August 2025. Beyond the central image of Jesus, the tomb’s curved walls are adorned with other illustrations, including depictions of birds, flora, and portraits of aristocratic men and women, some of whom appear to be accompanied by slaves.

Archaeologist Eren Erten Ertem from Iznik Museum commented that the murals illustrate “a transition from late paganism to early Christianity, depicting the deceased being sent off to the afterlife in a positive and fitting manner.” Alongside the artwork, the excavation yielded the skeletal remains of five individuals. Anthropologist Ruken Zeynep Kose reported that while the ages of two individuals could not be precisely determined due to deterioration, the remains included two young adults and a six-month-old infant.

Significance for Early Christian Studies

Professor Candida Moss, a leading authority on early Christianity at the University of Birmingham, emphasized the substantial significance of recent early Christian archaeological discoveries in Turkey. She stated, “Anatolia – what is now Türkiye – was in many ways the cradle of early Christianity.” The region, visited by apostles Peter and Paul and other early missionaries, holds immense importance in the religion’s formative history. Professor Moss also noted the shift of the Roman capital to what is now Istanbul after Christianity became the official religion of the empire.

This discovery provides a unique and remarkably preserved window into the artistic ions and spiritual practices of early Christian communities in a pivotal historical period.
