Motorists can anticipate a significant decrease in petrol and diesel prices in the coming days and weeks, as the oil market reacts to the imminent resolution of the conflict in Iran. Reports indicate a framework agreement has been reached by both US President Donald Trump and Iranian officials to end the hostilities, leading to an immediate downturn in oil prices.

Oil Market Reacts to Peace Prospects

The international benchmark Brent crude oil has fallen below $83 a barrel, marking its lowest point since early March. Prior to the recent conflict, oil was priced at $72 per barrel. However, prices surged to a high of $126 in April amid concerns over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on Middle Eastern oil supply. This disruption significantly increased the cost of fuel for drivers.

In the UK, the average price of petrol reached a peak of 159.7p per litre on May 28th, while diesel hit a high of 192.3p on April 15th. Consequently, filling a typical 55-litre petrol car tank has become up to £15 more expensive, a 20% increase. Diesel owners have faced an additional £27.50 cost, with pump prices escalating by as much as 35% due to regional tensions.

When to Expect Lower Fuel Costs

With growing optimism surrounding a peace deal, oil prices have dipped below $83 a barrel for the first time since February. Oil prices have remained under $100 a barrel for over two weeks, reflecting increased confidence in a peace agreement. Wholesale prices, paid by fuel companies, have declined by 20% since mid-May, and some of these reductions have already begun to appear at petrol stations.

Industry experts note that fluctuations in wholesale prices typically translate to pump prices with a lag of two to four weeks. This suggests that consumers may not see the full impact of oil prices falling below $83 until the end of the month. However, forecourt prices have been on a downward trend in recent weeks.

Current Price Reductions and Projections

Since the beginning of June, petrol prices have decreased by 3p per litre, averaging 156.8p, the lowest since early April, according to data from the AA. Diesel prices have fallen by 5p to 178.7p per litre, a level not seen since March 30th.

Luke Bosdet, a spokesperson for the AA, stated, “We are already observing the effect of reduced wholesale road fuel costs. This has effectively cut £1.50 from the cost of filling a typical car tank and £4 from filling an 80-litre van tank.”

The RAC has predicted that petrol prices could fall by at least another 4p per litre, with diesel potentially dropping by as much as 8p in the coming weeks. Simon Williams, Head of Policy at the RAC, commented that a peace deal “should quickly bring prices down at the pumps.” He added, “We saw the cost of both petrol and diesel rocket at the start of the conflict, so we hope the fall will be just as quick. Prior to the deal being announced, we were already expecting prices to come down significantly. If oil now begins to consistently trade around $85 – something we haven’t seen since early March – we should see the price of petrol reduce to 148p in the next couple of weeks. Diesel, which currently costs an average of 177p, ought to fall to under 160p. Before the war began, we had an oil price of $70, which translated to an average petrol price of 132p and 141p for diesel.”

Regional Price Trends

Latest figures indicate that drivers in Northern Ireland and the North East of England have experienced the most substantial reductions in petrol pump prices as the UK average fell to its lowest point since early April. In the past fortnight, the average price of unleaded petrol in Northern Ireland has dropped by 4.4p, while motorists in the North East have seen a 3.2p decrease. The North East has also recorded the largest reductions in diesel prices, with a slip of 6.7p per litre over the last two weeks.

The AA attributes some of the improved retailer behavior to the government’s Fuel Finder scheme, introduced in January. Bosdet noted, “In late April and early May, wholesale road fuel values rose substantially above where they were after the initial surge in March, yet pump price increases were fairly muted. On the motorways, service areas that had been charging close to 185p a litre for petrol earlier in the conflict continued to charge less than 180p, even with the higher costs in early May. We believe the greater pump-price transparency, which also allows fuel stations to promote their comparative prices, is now working well.”

However, it is acknowledged that oil and fuel commodity values have been volatile since the conflict began. Any shift in US policy could potentially lead to an increase in fuel prices.
