Striker Edinson Cavani Parts Ways with Boca Juniors

Veteran striker Edinson Cavani has reportedly agreed to terminate his contract with Argentinian club Boca Juniors. The move comes as the 39-year-old forward expresses his desire to continue his playing career, while also dedicating time to his burgeoning wine business.

Cavani, who previously played for Manchester United from 2020 to 2022, joined Boca Juniors in 2023. During his tenure, he appeared in 81 matches and scored 28 goals. The decision to mutually end his contract is said to be influenced by recurring injury issues, which have limited his appearances this season.

Injury Concerns and Future Plans

Sources indicate that Cavani has been sidelined by lumbago and a herniated disc, preventing him from playing in numerous matches and scoring this season. He recently underwent microsurgery on a disc in his back. Despite these setbacks, a representative stated that Cavani feels well and is eager to continue playing, emphasizing that this contract cancellation does not signify retirement.

Alongside his football ambitions, Cavani is actively involved in managing his premium wine brand, Cavani Wines, which was launched in 2024. This venture will now reportedly occupy a significant portion of his time.

A Decorated Career Continues

During his time at Boca Juniors, Cavani was unable to secure any major trophies, though the team did reach the final of the 2023 Copa Libertadores, the continental equivalent of the Champions League.

This is not the first instance of Cavani terminating a contract early. Previously, while at Spanish club Valencia, it was reported that he paid approximately £1.3 million to end his agreement. Cavani’s European career began in Italy with Palermo in 2007, followed by successful stints with Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain, where he won six league titles. He later moved to Manchester United, scoring 19 goals in 59 appearances, before his move to Spain and then Argentina.

Internationally, Cavani has represented Uruguay with distinction, scoring 58 goals in 136 appearances, making him the nation’s second-highest all-time scorer behind Luis Suarez. He was also part of the squad that won the 2011 Copa America. Cavani, known by the nickname ‘El Matador,’ retired from international football in 2022.
