Zanzibar Set for Direct UK Flights with Year-Round Warmth
Travel operator TUI is introducing direct flights and holiday packages from the UK to Zanzibar, an island paradise off the coast of Tanzania. Often lauded for its stunning turquoise waters and affordability, Zanzibar is being positioned as a compelling alternative to the Maldives.
New Direct Route Launching in 2027
Beginning November 3, 2027, TUI will operate direct flights from London Gatwick to Zanzibar twice weekly. This service, running until March 22, 2028, marks the first-ever direct air link from the UK to the island. Previously, travellers typically faced layovers in hubs like Dubai.
Excitement for ‘Island Paradise’ Route
TUI’s Commercial Director, Chris Logan, expressed enthusiasm for the new route, calling it an “island paradise.” He stated, “With our established hotel portfolio already in place, we’re confident Zanzibar will be a standout addition to our Winter 2027 programme, tapping into growing demand for long-haul destinations that deliver both experience and value. By introducing flights from the UK, we’re opening up everything the island has to offer, from white-sand beaches and rich culture to unforgettable excursions, all brought together in one seamless package.”
Year-Round Appeal and Cultural Richness
Zanzibar, famously known as the birthplace of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and nicknamed the ‘Spice Island’ due to its unique blend of Indian and African influences, offers a warm climate with temperatures consistently above 23°C. The destination also boasts a minimal time difference, just two hours ahead of the UK, and affordable local amenities, with beers available for approximately £1.
New Hotel Offerings and All-Inclusive Packages
TUI has expanded its hotel presence in Zanzibar, recently opening properties such as the five-star The Mora Zanzibar and the TUI Blue Bahari Zanzibar. Seven-night all-inclusive packages are set to start from £1,615 per person.
Excursions and Island Exploration
Through TUI Musement, holidaymakers can book excursions including safari trips to Nyerere and Serengeti National Parks, accessible via short flights. Visitors are encouraged to explore the island’s diverse offerings, from its atmospheric spice markets and historic landmarks in Stone Town, the oldest part of Zanzibar’s capital, to its renowned beaches.

Industry experts have long noted Zanzibar’s appeal, with some describing it as a destination that “really does rival the Maldives for its beaches and ocean.”
Additional Direct Flights Planned
In addition to TUI’s service, Air Tanzania is also slated to launch direct flights from London Gatwick to Zanzibar three times a week, commencing in July 2027.
