Recent actions by King Charles III and Prince William signal a potential shift towards greater financial transparency and public benefit within the British Royal Family. These moves, involving significant tax contributions and the repurposing of royal assets, have prompted discussions about the financial responsibilities and public perception of other royal family members.

King Charles III’s Tax Disclosure and Public Access to Palaces

King Charles III has made history by becoming the first British monarch to publicly disclose his tax bill. For the 2024-2025 tax year, the King paid approximately £12.9 million in taxes, placing him among the top 100 UK taxpayers. This disclosure is a significant step towards greater openness regarding the monarch’s personal finances.

In conjunction with this financial transparency, a decision has been made regarding Buckingham Palace. Following a decade of renovations, the King will not be returning to reside in the palace. Instead, the 775-room official London residence will be made more accessible to the British public and tourists. This move aims to enhance public engagement with a significant national landmark.

Prince William’s Generosity with Dartmoor Prison Funds

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, has also demonstrated a commitment to public service through a notable financial gesture. He has voluntarily relinquished his right to an annual £1.5 million payment, which was previously received as rent from Dartmoor Prison. The prison, now closed, was a source of this income. Prince William’s decision means these funds will now be redirected to benefit the local community surrounding the former correctional facility. This act underscores a focus on community welfare and the responsible use of assets.

Scrutiny on Other Royal Family Members

These high-profile actions by the King and the Prince of Wales have inevitably led to increased scrutiny of other members of the Royal Family, particularly concerning their financial arrangements and contributions to the public good. Questions are being raised about the extent to which all royals are aligning with this emerging ethos of transparency and public service.

The York Family and Royal Residences

The financial arrangements of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, have come under particular attention. A recent report by the National Audit Office (NAO), the first of its kind in twenty years focusing on royal residences, has shed light on the subsidized accommodation provided to the princesses.

Despite neither Princess Beatrice nor Princess Eugenie being classified as ‘working royals’ – those who undertake official duties on behalf of the Crown – they reportedly benefit from subsidized rental agreements for apartments within royal palaces. Princess Eugenie occupies a three-bedroom property in Kensington Palace, while Princess Beatrice has an apartment in St James’s Palace. Both of these prestigious residences are maintained through public funds via the Sovereign Grant.

Norman Baker, a former Home Office minister, has publicly criticized these arrangements, describing the subsidization of luxury accommodation for non-working royals as “outrageous” and suggesting the public is “being taken for a ride.”

Princesses’ Living Situations and Financial Independence

Further examination reveals that these palace apartments are not the primary residences for either princess. Princess Beatrice, married to property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, resides in a £3 million home in the Cotswolds with their two daughters. Princess Eugenie, married to marketing executive Jack Brooksbank, lives in Portugal with their two sons.

Both sisters have established successful careers outside of royal duties. Princess Beatrice is involved in the art and design world, while Princess Eugenie works in the art gallery sector and has also been involved in various charitable initiatives. Their personal financial independence, coupled with their non-working royal status, has led to questions about the necessity and public perception of their continued access to subsidized royal housing.

The Epstein Association and Public Perception

Adding another layer to the public scrutiny, the princesses’ past associations have also been brought to light. Reports emerged concerning their attendance at a celebration with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2009. At the time, both sisters were young adults, and their mother, Sarah Ferguson, was also present. This association, occurring after Epstein’s prison sentence for sex offenses, has been a point of concern for some regarding their public image and judgment.

Conclusion: A Call for Alignment with New Royal Standards

The recent financial disclosures and asset repurposing by King Charles III and Prince William appear to set a new precedent for royal conduct, emphasizing transparency and public benefit. The narrative emerging suggests a potential recalibration of expectations for all members of the Royal Family. As the monarchy navigates contemporary societal demands for accountability and demonstrable service, the actions of senior royals are likely to influence how the financial arrangements and public contributions of other family members are viewed and evaluated by the public.
