An American pilot, identified as Nicholas F Gosselin, was killed and his civilian aircraft set ablaze in Indonesia’s easternmost Papua region, according to statements from a separatist group. The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) claimed responsibility for the incident, stating it was a deliberate message to the United States and Indonesian governments. The group alleges the pilot was targeted because his plane was frequently used to transport Indonesian military personnel, violating their stated ultimatum.

Separatist Group Claims Responsibility

Sebby Sambom, a spokesperson for the TPNPB, announced that their fighters intercepted the plane after it landed in the Yahukimo region of Highland Papua province. He detailed that the aircraft was subsequently set on fire. Sambom asserted that the TPNPB’s actions were a direct response to what they perceive as a failure by both the Indonesian and US governments to address the fundamental issues driving the long-standing conflict in Papua.

The TPNPB has previously issued warnings against civilian aircraft entering areas they consider controlled zones, often referred to as “red zones.” Sambom indicated that such incursions would prompt further attacks if Indonesia continued to permit them. Reports suggest that rebels involved in the incident were armed with guns and axes, and a video purportedly showing them raising the Morning Star flag, a potent symbol of Papuan independence, was circulated by the TPNPB.

Official Confirmation and Details of the Incident

Authorities in Indonesia confirmed that a plane, with an American pilot and seven Papuan passengers, was found burned at an airport in Yahukimo. Yusuf Sutejo, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s joint police-military operations in Papua, verified the discovery of the burned aircraft. However, Sutejo stated that officials could not immediately confirm whether rebel involvement was the cause or if the pilot had indeed been killed. All passengers on board were reported to be Papuan nationals.

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation provided further details, confirming the flight originated from Wamena, another city within Highland Papua, and that communication ceased shortly after the plane’s arrival in Yahukimo. The aircraft is operated by PT AMA, an airline company that typically transports essential goods such as food, fuel, and mail to remote villages across Papua, according to information available on its website.

Background of the Papua Conflict

The western half of the island of Papua, rich in natural resources, has been the site of a low-level but persistent independence struggle against Indonesian rule for decades. In recent years, the frequency and deadliness of attacks by independence fighters have reportedly increased, coinciding with their alleged acquisition of more sophisticated weaponry.

This incident echoes a previous event in February 2023, when Papuan rebels abducted a New Zealand pilot, Phillip Mehrtens. He had landed a small commercial aircraft in the rugged, mountainous terrain of Nduga, also in Highland Papua. Mehrtens was held captive for several months before his release in September 2024.

International and Airline Reactions

The US embassy in Jakarta has not yet issued an immediate response to requests for comment regarding the incident. Similarly, PT AMA, the airline operator of the burned aircraft, has not yet responded to inquiries.

The TPNPB’s statement framing the attack as a message to the US and Indonesia highlights the complex geopolitical dimensions of the Papua conflict. The group appears to be leveraging international attention to pressure both governments regarding their involvement and stance on the ongoing struggle for self-determination in the region.

Conclusion

The killing of the American pilot and the destruction of the aircraft in Yahukimo represent a significant escalation in the Papua conflict. The TPNPB’s explicit declaration of intent and their targeting of a civilian aircraft carrying an international pilot underscore the group’s determination to make their grievances known on a global stage. As investigations continue and official responses emerge, the incident is likely to draw renewed international scrutiny to the long-standing human rights and political issues in Papua.
