Punk duo Bob Vylan has announced legal action against the BBC, alleging defamation following the broadcaster’s coverage of their performance at the Glastonbury Festival last summer. The band claims the BBC unfairly labelled their actions and seeks to hold the corporation accountable for its response to the controversy.

Background of the Glastonbury Controversy

During their set at Glastonbury in June 2025, Bob Vylan, fronted by Bobby Vylan (real name Pascal Robinson-Foster), included chants of “Free Palestine” and “Death to the IDF,” referring to the Israeli Defense Forces. The entire performance was livestreamed on BBC iPlayer. Following the broadcast, the BBC issued an apology, describing the sentiments as “utterly unacceptable” and “anti-semitic,” and later removed the performance from its on-demand service. Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis also condemned the chants, stating they “very much crossed a line” and that “there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.”

The controversy led to a criminal investigation by Avon and Somerset Police into the chants. However, the investigation was closed without further action, with the police citing insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction.

Bob Vylan’s Stance and Legal Action

In a statement posted on social media, Bob Vylan revealed their decision to sue the BBC. The band asserts that the BBC “wasted no time in placing labels upon us that did not, do not and never will fit.” They argue that the corporation, funded by the public, has failed to represent the interests of the people and their access to unbiased news.

The band’s statement elaborated on their grievances:

  • The BBC is accused of attempting to silence those who oppose actions in Palestine by labelling them as anti-semitic.
  • The duo claims their speeches were edited, their content removed, and documentaries challenging the BBC’s narrative were blocked.
  • Bob Vylan views these responses as unacceptable and intends to use the legal challenge to remind the BBC of the power of the people they are attempting to silence.

“We take great pleasure in serving them that reminder in court,” the band stated, expressing their determination to pursue the defamation case.

Consequences and Wider Reactions

In the immediate aftermath of the Glastonbury incident, Bob Vylan experienced significant repercussions. Several of their concerts, including festival appearances in Manchester and France, were cancelled. A scheduled gig in Germany also fell through, and the band was denied visas for a planned tour in the United States.

The BBC’s initial response acknowledged a failure in their live coverage. In a statement released shortly after the festival, the corporation admitted, “with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.” They also indicated a review of their guidance for live events to ensure clarity for teams on when to keep content on air.

The government also weighed in on the matter. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy addressed the House of Commons, condemning the “appalling and unacceptable” scenes at Glastonbury. She put pressure on the then-director general to explain the broadcast of the performance and the delay in cutting the feed. Ms. Nandy stated that the government “strongly supported” freedom of expression but drew a clear line, asserting, “We do not accept incitement to violence, hate speech, or anti-Semitism is art.” She emphasized the government’s willingness to intervene when national broadcasters fail to uphold standards and when the rights and safety of communities are at risk.

Band’s Previous Statements and Artistic Expression

Following the initial controversy, Bobby Vylan responded on Instagram with the phrase “I said what I said,” indicating no immediate regret for his words. He described being “inundated with messages of both support and hatred.” In a more reflective post, he drew a parallel between his daughter voicing her opinions on school dinners and the importance of speaking up for change, whether on a small or large scale.

He articulated a philosophy of encouraging future generations to “pick up the torch” for change, advocating for visible action such as marching, campaigning, and speaking out on stages. He concluded that while everyday concerns like school dinners matter, so too does advocating for change in foreign policy.

Bob Vylan, formed in Ipswich in 2017, has released five albums. They previously won the MOBO Award for Best Alternative Music Act in November 2022.

Conclusion

The lawsuit filed by Bob Vylan against the BBC marks a significant escalation in the dispute over the Glastonbury performance. The band’s defamation claim centers on the BBC’s characterization of their chants and subsequent actions. This legal battle will likely bring further scrutiny to the broadcaster’s editorial policies regarding live events and the complex intersection of artistic expression, political protest, and allegations of hate speech.
