Thomas Tuchel lauded England’s “heroic” performance following their dramatic 3-2 World Cup victory against Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium. The Three Lions, reduced to 10 men for a significant portion of the match, showcased remarkable resilience and determination to secure a crucial win on foreign soil, a feat Tuchel described as feeling “almost like we won a final.”

England’s Resilience Shines Through

Despite facing numerous challenges, including playing with a man down for over 50 minutes, competing at high altitude, and enduring a delayed kick-off, England managed to withstand a fierce comeback from the co-hosts. Jude Bellingham was instrumental, netting two goals, while Harry Kane converted a crucial penalty. The team’s ability to overcome adversity, which included an 11-minute injury time period, underscored their mental fortitude.

“This is a moment of joy. It’s a heroic performance and a heroic result,” Tuchel stated, expressing his immense pride in the players. “We found a way to win and we did it with pure mentality and heart, overcoming every obstacle thrown at us.” He emphasized that the players gave absolutely everything for the win, the country, and the shirt, creating a “special moment” that would resonate with fans.

A Night of High Drama at the Azteca

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions. Bellingham opened the scoring with a header in the 36th minute and doubled England’s lead just 98 seconds later, assisted by Kane. Mexico pulled one back before halftime through Julian Quinones. The second half saw further drama when Jarell Quansah received a straight red card in the 54th minute for a challenge on Jesus Gallardo. Kane extended England’s lead with a penalty in the 60th minute, but Mexico capitalized on a subsequent penalty, converted by Raul Jimenez, after Kane conceded a foul.

Despite the numerical disadvantage and Mexico’s relentless pressure, England’s defense held firm for the remaining 21 minutes, securing their place in the quarter-finals where they are set to face Erling Haaland’s Norway in Miami.

Tuchel’s Frustration with Officiating

While celebrating the victory, Tuchel did not hold back in his criticism of the officiating. He expressed strong dissatisfaction with decisions made by the referees and VAR, particularly those that went against England. “Not good enough,” he told reporters when asked about the standard of officiating. “Referees are just not good enough. Fourth officials are just not good enough. That is the bottom line.” He questioned the clarity of VAR reviews, citing specific instances where he felt clear and obvious errors were not corrected.

Kane Reflects on a ‘Crazy Game’

A visibly exhausted Harry Kane described the match as “crazy” and highlighted the team’s fighting spirit. “We had to fight and we had to find something,” Kane said, struggling to speak due to the intensity of the game and his post-match celebrations. He acknowledged the immense pressure, the crowd, and the circumstances against them, yet emphasized that they “found a way.”

Injury Concerns and Future Outlook

Amidst the jubilation, there was concern for Jordan Henderson, who sustained an injury after celebrating by vaulting an advertising board. Tuchel confirmed that Henderson was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be a serious wrist injury. “I am also sad because Jordan is injured,” Tuchel remarked.

When questioned about a potential semi-final clash with Argentina, Tuchel remained focused on the present. “I will not talk about the semi-final, my friend,” he stated. “Now, we have the chance for some days off and I tell you something: I will not re-watch our match, and I will not watch anything about Norway in the next 24 hours. I will do one full day without football. And then we will think about Norway. We’ll take it step-by-step.”

Respect for the Opposition

Tuchel also extended his respect to the defeated Mexican team and their passionate supporters. “I almost should say sorry that you’re out, because I saw the passion and emotion of all the people on the side of the streets today and yesterday, and from the bus,” he said. “But I’m incredibly proud of my team and our achievements.” The sentiment was echoed by the excited English nation, who celebrated a memorable victory.

The manager also made a lighthearted remark about Harry Kane potentially contacting former US President Donald Trump, who had previously praised Kane. Tuchel jokingly suggested Kane might ask Trump to intervene regarding Quansah’s suspension, referencing a prior instance where Trump’s influence reportedly helped suspend Folarin Balogun’s red card ban. “That’s not a bad place to start,” the German quipped.
