Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori has been discharged from the hospital following a car accident that resulted in four broken ribs and a fractured thumb. Despite the injuries sustained in the collision, Dettori, 55, is reportedly determined to make a return to the racing circuit in approximately ten weeks. He is currently recovering at his mother-in-law’s residence.

Details of the Road Smash

The incident occurred near Dettori’s home in Suffolk. He was reportedly driving a borrowed two-seater Smart car when another vehicle, identified as a Ford Focus, allegedly collided with his car, causing it to flip onto its roof. Dettori was able to exit the vehicle himself and contact emergency services. The driver of the other vehicle is said to have been unharmed.

Following the accident, Dettori was transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. He was admitted with multiple fractures, including four broken ribs and a broken thumb. He was released from the hospital on Friday evening and is now focusing on his recovery.

Commitment to Leger Legends Race

Although Frankie Dettori officially retired from professional racing in February, he had previously committed to a one-off appearance at Doncaster’s Leger Legends race, scheduled for September. Dettori has expressed his strong desire to honor this commitment despite his recent injuries.

Speaking about his recovery and the upcoming race, Dettori stated, “We’ve ten weeks before the Leger Legends race, so hopefully I’ll be OK.” He acknowledged the severity of his injuries, adding, “If it was next week I definitely would be out, as I won’t be able to run, never mind get on a horse.” However, he remains optimistic, believing that time will aid his healing process and allow him to participate. “Time heals everything and hopefully I can still make Doncaster. I’m committed to it, I said I would do it and if I can I will,” he remarked.

Background and Support

Dettori’s wife, Catherine, shared details about the circumstances leading up to the accident. She explained that the couple had borrowed the Smart car from a friend, as they did not have a vehicle readily available due to recent travel. Dettori had reportedly gone out to purchase chicken at the time of the collision.

Catherine Dettori conveyed her relief that her husband was going to be alright and expressed gratitude for the support received. “We’re just so thankful. Frankie’s being looked after and, thankfully, he’s going to be OK,” she said. She also described the frightening experience of seeing her husband at the roadside after the crash, emphasizing the seriousness of such incidents.

Neighbors were quick to offer assistance following the accident, and Catherine Dettori commended their kindness and the immediate support that was provided.

Frankie Dettori’s Current Role

In addition to his racing commitments, Frankie Dettori serves as a global ambassador for the Amo Racing group, owned by Kia Joorabchian. This role highlights his continued involvement in the horse racing industry beyond his active riding career.

Recovery and Future Prospects

The focus for Frankie Dettori now is on a steady recovery from his injuries. The ten-week timeframe before the Leger Legends race provides a challenging but potentially achievable goal for his return to the saddle. His determination to compete, even after a significant accident, underscores his enduring passion for horse racing.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in motorsport, even for experienced professionals. Dettori’s ability to extricate himself from the damaged vehicle and his subsequent resolve to recover and race again have drawn attention from the racing community and fans alike.

As he recuperates, Dettori will be closely monitored by medical professionals and his support team. The racing world will be watching with interest to see if he can indeed make his planned comeback at Doncaster, a testament to his resilience and dedication to the sport.
