Manchester United has officially confirmed the proposed location for its ambitious new 100,000-seater stadium, a project estimated to cost £2 billion. This significant development, envisioned as a “Wembley of the North,” will be situated just 350 metres north-west of the current Old Trafford ground. The announcement follows the club’s acquisition of a 25-acre site, marking a crucial step forward in the long-discussed plans to replace the historic, albeit aging, Old Trafford stadium.
Stadium District and Economic Impact
The new state-of-the-art facility is slated to be the centrepiece of a newly designated Stadium District. This district forms a core component of the wider Trafford Wharfside development, a large-scale regeneration project aimed at transforming the area. Beyond the immediate stadium, the project is projected to be a major economic driver, forecasting the creation of approximately 48,000 jobs and the development of 15,000 new homes. The anticipated annual boost to the UK economy is estimated at a substantial £7.3 billion.
Masterplan Unveiled
These detailed plans were formally presented at Old Trafford, accompanied by a comprehensive masterplan. This document was published by Trafford Council and has the backing of several key partners, including the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation (OTR MDC), the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). The masterplan visually confirms the site United is targeting, addressing previous speculation about the stadium’s exact placement.
Vision for a World-Class Destination
Collette Roche, CEO of Manchester United’s new stadium development, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s progress. She highlighted the publication of the Wharfside Masterplan as a pivotal moment, emphasizing the opportunity to create a “world-class home” within a dynamic and transformative district for both Trafford and the wider Greater Manchester region. Roche stated that the project represents a “once-in-a-
