As Britain grapples with soaring temperatures, the temptation to tackle household chores can be strong. However, cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, widely known as ‘The Queen of Clean,’ advises homeowners to put away the cleaning supplies and relax. Certain domestic tasks, she explains, can actually exacerbate the heat, making your home more uncomfortable and leading to less effective cleaning results. By strategically postponing these chores until cooler weather returns, you can maintain a more pleasant living environment and achieve better outcomes.

Why Certain Chores Worsen Heatwave Conditions

During periods of intense heat, the primary goal for many is to keep their homes as cool as possible. However, some common household activities inadvertently contribute to higher indoor temperatures. For instance, using appliances that generate heat or require specific conditions for cleaning solutions to work effectively can turn your home into an even more stifling environment. Lynsey Crombie emphasizes that understanding which tasks to postpone is key to navigating a heatwave comfortably.

Household Chores to Postpone During Hot Weather

Lynsey Crombie has identified several household chores that are best avoided when temperatures are high. These tasks, while necessary at other times, can significantly increase discomfort and reduce cleaning efficacy during a heatwave.

1. Tumble Drying Laundry

While it might seem efficient to use a tumble dryer to quickly process laundry, this appliance releases a substantial amount of heat. On an already hot day, this directly contributes to warming up your home. Crombie suggests an alternative: hanging laundry outdoors to dry. During a heatwave, clothes often dry much faster in the sun and wind. This method not only saves energy but also helps keep your indoor environment cooler. It’s advisable, however, not to leave laundry exposed for excessively long periods, as prolonged sun exposure can cause colors to fade. An hour is typically sufficient for drying.

2. Deep Cleaning the Oven

Deep cleaning an oven is a labor-intensive task that often requires specific cleaning products to sit for a period and may necessitate using the oven afterward to complete the process. Both of these factors generate significant heat, making the kitchen an uncomfortably warm space. Crombie recommends saving this chore for a cooler day, allowing you to enjoy the sunshine outdoors instead of overheating in the kitchen. Furthermore, she advises avoiding the use of the oven for cooking altogether during a heatwave if possible.

3. Cleaning Windows

The effectiveness of window cleaning solutions is heavily dependent on ambient temperature. When temperatures rise, window cleaning sprays can evaporate too quickly. This rapid evaporation often leads to streaks, smears, and watermarks, resulting in a less-than-perfect finish. For clear, streak-free windows, Crombie suggests tackling this task during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, or waiting until the windows are in the shade.

4. Vacuuming Large Areas

Vacuum cleaners, especially powerful models or when used for extensive cleaning, generate heat as a byproduct of their operation. Cleaning multiple rooms or a larger home can significantly increase the indoor temperature. To mitigate this, Crombie recommends vacuuming in the early morning before the day’s heat builds up, or postponing the task until the evening when the house has had a chance to cool down. This approach not only makes the task more pleasant for the individual but also conserves energy as the vacuum works more efficiently in a cooler environment.

5. Using Steam Cleaners

Steam cleaners are highly effective for deep cleaning kitchens, bathrooms, and hard floors, as they utilize heat and moisture. However, during a heatwave, their use can transform an already warm home into an uncomfortably humid and stifling environment. The combination of emitted heat and moisture can make living spaces feel significantly hotter and more oppressive. Crombie advises that this type of intensive cleaning is best reserved for cooler weather when the added heat and humidity will be less of an issue.

Maintaining a Comfortable Home During a Heatwave

Beyond avoiding specific chores, Lynsey Crombie offers general advice for maintaining a comfortable home during hot weather. She suggests focusing on quick maintenance tasks that keep the home fresh without generating excess heat. Simple actions can make a significant difference:

  • Ventilate Wisely: Open windows early in the morning when the air is coolest to allow fresh air to circulate.
  • Block Out Sun: During the hottest parts of the day, draw curtains or blinds to prevent solar heat from entering and warming up rooms.
  • Bare Floors: Crombie mentions that she rolls up rugs during a heatwave, leaving floorboards bare. This can help rooms feel cooler.

By implementing these strategies, homeowners can better manage their indoor environment during periods of high temperatures. The more demanding cleaning tasks can be addressed later, when cooler weather makes them more manageable and less taxing.
