A planned tennis holiday in Corfu devolved into a chaotic experience for one couple when their chosen “no-frills” aparthotel turned out to be an active construction zone. What began as a dream of sunny courts and relaxation quickly transformed into a test of resilience against noise, fumes, and a cascade of cancelled activities.

The Allure of a DIY Tennis Trip

Seeking an escape from rain-soaked local tennis lessons, the author and her boyfriend envisioned a sunnier playing field. Their initial search for organized tennis holidays revealed options that were prohibitively expensive, typically confined to luxury resorts. This led the author to pursue a more budget-friendly, do-it-yourself approach. She identified an aparthotel in Corfu that, based on its online presentation, promised spacious rooms, a swimming pool, pleasant gardens, and, crucially, a tennis court. Its affordability in March made it seem like an ideal find.

Arrival to an Unforeseen Reality

Upon arrival, the couple’s optimism quickly evaporated. The aparthotel was not merely “no-frills”; it was a full-scale building site. Approximately twenty construction workers were actively engaged in various tasks, including operating heavy machinery, demolition, painting, and landscaping. The swimming pool, depicted as a serene oasis in promotional images, was empty and filled with rubble. Adding to the surreal atmosphere, they were the only guests.

Initial attempts to address the situation at reception proved challenging. A brief search for alternative accommodation nearby yielded no immediate solutions. Faced with limited options, the couple resolved to make the best of their unexpected circumstances. They were initially shown an apartment directly amidst the construction noise, which also featured twin beds, not ideal for the couple. A quick change of heart from the staff led to their relocation to a double room at the far end of the property. This new room offered a terrace overlooking a pond, providing a degree of separation from the most intense building work. While the noise was still present, it became more manageable over time.

Tennis Dreams Meet Harsh Realities

Their spirits were somewhat lifted by the arrival of their booked tennis coach, who was described as fantastic. The plan was to have daily lessons for four days, supplemented by practice sessions, with the goal of significantly improving their game. The first day concluded with dinner in town, enjoying live music, and retiring with a sense of optimism about the tennis prospects.

The following morning brought new challenges. A strong, unpleasant smell permeated the air, originating from a bonfire lit by the construction crew. More concerningly, their tennis coach, who had appeared in good health just hours before, called to cancel his lesson due to a sudden fever. He expressed hope to return the next day, but they never heard from him again. Undeterred by the lingering fumes and the absence of their coach, the couple decided to continue practicing. However, they were forced to use the hotel’s provided equipment, which included rackets with broken strings and poorly performing balls. When rain began to fall, their practice session was cut short.

Further Disappointments and Unexpected Pleasures

Hoping to salvage their holiday, the couple embarked on a planned day trip to a small, wooded island known for its walking trails, swimming opportunities, and picnic spots. Their research indicated this was a viable March excursion. However, upon reaching the location, they found the jetty deserted and the booking office boarded up, indicating it was not operational during the off-season. This dashed their hopes for a boat ride and island exploration.

A subsequent idea for a “fancy lunch” at a highly recommended family-run restaurant, known for its personalized meze service, also met a dead end. Like the boat trip, the restaurant was closed for the season in March. Their dining options were reduced to a casual souvlaki shop.

A Glimmer of Hope: Yoga and Local Flavors

The only activity that proceeded as planned was a yoga class. The author had found a local studio offering classes during their stay. The owner proved to be an excellent and welcoming instructor, guiding them through the session effectively, even though the instruction was in Greek. This experience provided a much-needed positive note to their holiday.

An unexpected highlight emerged during their stay: the discovery of Corfu’s local enthusiasm for kumquats. Relaxing in a sunny square with bright orange kumquat spritzes, the couple finally felt a sense of holiday relaxation. While it wasn’t the tennis-focused getaway they had initially envisioned, the refreshing drink and the moment of calm offered a different, albeit unplanned, kind of holiday enjoyment.

Conclusion: Lessons Learned from a Challenging Trip

This DIY holiday in Corfu served as a stark reminder that budget travel, especially during the shoulder season, can come with unforeseen challenges. While the couple managed to find small moments of enjoyment through yoga and local beverages, the pervasive construction, cancelled plans, and lack of essential services significantly detracted from their intended experience. The trip underscores the importance of thorough, up-to-date research, particularly regarding seasonal operations and the potential for unexpected disruptions when booking accommodation that may be undergoing renovations or is in a less-developed state.
