Accusations of biased officiating have surfaced following Argentina’s victory over Switzerland in the World Cup quarter-finals, with Swiss players and their manager expressing strong dissatisfaction with the referee’s decisions. The controversy centers on a second yellow card shown to Swiss striker Breel Embolo, which ultimately led to his dismissal and, according to critics, tipped the balance of the match in favor of Lionel Messi’s team. The incident has reignited broader discussions about potential favoritism in the tournament.

Controversial Red Card Fuels Swiss Outrage

The pivotal moment occurred in the 72nd minute of the quarter-final match, with the score tied. Breel Embolo was initially fouled, but a subsequent Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review led to the decision being overturned. The referee determined that Embolo had dived, resulting in a second yellow card and his expulsion from the game. This new rule, introduced for the current World Cup, allows officials to change a booking or red card if it’s determined the original foul was committed by an opponent.

Switzerland’s players were incensed by the ruling. Defender Manuel Akanji voiced his frustration, stating, “Every little thing was called against us. I’ve never experienced such a one-sided game.” Manager Murat Yakin echoed these sentiments, describing the refereeing as “incomprehensible.” The team felt that fouls committed by Argentinian players went unpunished, while their own actions were scrutinized more harshly.

Akanji, who previously played for Manchester City, elaborated on the difficulties faced. “When you have the referee against you, it becomes difficult. Every little thing was called against us. Every dive and every foul by the Argentinians went unpunished,” he said. “I don’t usually say anything against the officials, but I’ve never experienced such a one-sided game as today.” He expressed pride in his team’s performance despite the outcome, believing they held their own against Argentina until the red card disrupted their momentum.

Midfielder Remo Freuler also questioned the VAR intervention, stating, “I still don’t understand how VAR can intervene in such a situation. FIFA needs to explain that to me.” Captain Granit Xhaka appealed for the integrity of the game to be preserved, warning that such decisions “are killing football.”

Broader Conspiracy Theories Emerge

These strong reactions from the Swiss camp have amplified existing conspiracy theories circulating online, which suggest that FIFA is favoring Argentina and Lionel Messi to reach the final. These theories gained traction after Egypt, who were eliminated by Argentina in the previous round, also lodged complaints about the officiating. Egyptian winger Mostafa Ziko had declared, “This tournament has been fixed,” while coach Hossam Hassan stated, “This match was rigged, and the whole world saw it.”

FIFA’s chief refereeing officer, Pierluigi Collina, has publicly defended the integrity of the referees, asserting that “nobody can question the integrity” of their decisions and that “unfounded allegations have no place in our sport.” However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s comment that he “suffered with Argentina” during their match, while also claiming neutrality, has been interpreted by some as further evidence of a preferential treatment narrative.

Match Progression and Final Score

Despite the controversy and playing with ten men for a significant portion of the second half, Switzerland managed to hold Argentina until the 112th minute. It was then that Julian Alvarez scored a spectacular goal, curling the ball into the top corner. Lautaro Martinez sealed the victory with a third goal in stoppage time, setting up a semi-final clash between Argentina and England.

The match officials for the quarter-final were Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro and VAR official Guillermo Pacheco from Mexico. The narrative of Embolo’s red card, stemming from an incident where he was initially fouled but later adjudged to have dived, has become a focal point of the post-match debate.

Conclusion

The Swiss team’s strong reactions highlight a growing unease among participants regarding officiating standards in the World Cup. While FIFA maintains the integrity of its referees, the repeated accusations from multiple nations suggest a need for transparency and clear communication regarding controversial decisions. The focus now shifts to the semi-final, but the debate over the fairness of Argentina’s path to this stage is likely to continue.
