Toowoomba man Dharminder Singh has been formally charged with the murder of Jana Armstrong, following the discovery of her body in Redbank Creek. Mr. Singh appeared before Toowoomba Magistrates Court via video link, facing one count of murder and a domestic violence offence. Police allege that Mr. Singh murdered Ms. Armstrong on July 7 and subsequently disposed of her body off Esk Hampton Road.

Court Proceedings and Remand

Dharminder Singh, 48, the former partner of the deceased, was brought before the court in custody. The case was mentioned in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court, where he was charged with murder and a related domestic violence offence. Mr. Singh was arrested early Sunday morning at a residence in Harristown, a suburb of Toowoomba. This arrest followed the discovery of Ms. Armstrong’s body on Saturday evening.

The body of Jana Armstrong, 30, was found in steep bushland near Redbank Creek, an area situated close to the Esk and Ravensbourne National Parks. Pig hunters reportedly discovered the remains, bringing an end to a four-day search for the young mother. Ms. Armstrong leaves behind a four-month-old baby son.

Magistrate Lisa O’Neill presided over the hearing. She ordered that a brief of evidence be presented by September 14. The case has been adjourned, with the next court date set for October 1. Mr. Singh has been remanded in custody until this date.

Family and Friends Present in Court

A significant number of Jana Armstrong’s family and friends, more than a dozen individuals, were present in the public gallery for the court appearance. Among them was Ms. Armstrong’s sister, Faith Isaacs, who was seen holding Ms. Armstrong’s four-month-old son. The group gathered outside the court, offering each other comfort and support, a day after the tragic discovery of Ms. Armstrong’s body in the rugged terrain outside Toowoomba.

Defence Statement and Police Appeal

Following the court proceedings, Mr. Singh’s defence lawyer, Ramli Salehkon, addressed the media. He stated that his client maintains his innocence and that the matter will be vigorously defended.

Investigators are still working to determine the precise cause of Jana Armstrong’s death. Detectives are meticulously reconstructing Mr. Singh’s alleged movements on the evening of Tuesday, July 7, and into the early hours of Wednesday, July 8.

Police have issued an appeal for public assistance. They are seeking any dash cam or CCTV footage that may have captured activity along Esk Hampton Road, the New England Highway, or in the vicinity of Toowoomba and Esk. Specifically, they are interested in footage from 10:30 PM on July 7 through to 1:30 AM on July 8. Earlier, authorities had released information regarding the last known sightings of Ms. Armstrong’s white Hyundai Kona in various suburbs on the evening of July 7.

Last Known Movements and Personal Impact

Jana Armstrong was last seen alive on the afternoon of July 7. She had met her sister, Faith Isaacs, for brunch earlier that day before returning to her home in Newtown. She was not seen or heard from after this. Ms. Armstrong’s car was discovered abandoned in the middle of a street, approximately 500 meters from her residence, at 6:00 AM on Wednesday, July 8.

Her infant son is now under the care of Faith Isaacs and her family. In a statement, Ms. Isaacs expressed the profound heartbreak and devastation experienced by the family. She conveyed gratitude for the public’s support and for those who participated in the weekend search efforts for her sister. Ms. Isaacs vowed to ensure her sister’s memory is kept alive for her son, stating, “I will never ever let him forget his beautiful mummy.”

Floral tributes have been placed at the entrance of Ms. Armstrong’s home, serving as a somber testament to the community’s grief.

Conclusion

The legal process for Dharminder Singh, accused of the murder of Jana Armstrong, is now underway, with the next court date scheduled for October 1. The investigation continues, with police appealing for further information from the public to aid in their inquiries. The community mourns the loss of Jana Armstrong, a young mother whose life was tragically cut short.
