The conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified, with both nations expanding their targets to include critical infrastructure and increasing attacks on maritime shipping. This escalation risks further destabilizing the region and disrupting global energy supplies, particularly as tensions rise around key maritime choke points like the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

US Strikes Iranian Infrastructure, Iran Retaliates

In a significant development, the US military has reportedly struck bridges within Iran, marking a shift towards targeting the nation’s infrastructure. In response, Iran has retaliated by targeting a power and desalination plant in Kuwait, a move that highlights the widening scope of the conflict. These actions come as both sides appear to be testing the limits of escalation following the collapse of a recent ceasefire agreement, raising concerns about a potential return to full-scale hostilities.

The US military’s Central Command confirmed it had resumed strikes on Iran for the seventh consecutive night, with operations occurring in the early hours of Saturday, Iranian time. These strikes are described as being designed to degrade Iranian military capabilities under the direction of the Commander in Chief. Following these US actions, Iranian media reported explosions and strikes in several locations, including Sirik, Ahvaz, and Yazd. Specifically, reports indicated that at least five bridges in southern Iran were hit, with seven fatalities reported in attacks on bridges in the southern port city of Bandar Khamir, which also saw its train station damaged. An airport in Iranshahr, a province bordering Pakistan, was also reportedly struck.

Maritime Attacks Intensify Around Key Waterways

The conflict has also seen a dramatic increase in maritime incidents. US Marines reportedly boarded a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital strait through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes. Iranian media, citing the Revolutionary Guards, reported that two oil tankers exploded and caught fire after navigating a mined route south of the strait. However, the US military denied this claim, labeling it as false, consistent with what it described as most claims made by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

Further complicating the maritime security landscape, armed individuals seized another vessel off the coast of Yemen. This incident has heightened concerns about the security of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, another critical chokepoint at the southern entrance to the Red Sea, which is crucial for oil shipments. The ongoing disruptions at sea have already impacted energy supplies from the Gulf region.

Iran’s Warnings and Regional Implications

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have issued stern warnings, stating that until US “aggression” ceases, the export of chemical fertilizers and even “a single drop of oil and gas” from the region will be impossible. This declaration underscores Iran’s intent to leverage its influence over regional energy flows as a retaliatory measure.

Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader and a former top commander of the Revolutionary Guards, warned against further US escalation or attempts to seize Iranian territory. He indicated that if US strikes persist, Iran would move into a phase of “full-scale offensive operations.”

Iran has also announced attacks on Gulf countries hosting US airbases, including Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait, as well as a US vessel in the northern Indian Ocean. State news agency IRNA reported that the Iranian navy fired a shore-to-sea cruise missile towards a vessel it deemed hostile in the northern Indian Ocean, causing the ship to move out of range. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have attacked a US drone depot in Bahrain and destroyed Bahrain’s main artificial intelligence center with ballistic missiles and drones.

Kuwaiti Infrastructure Hit, Global Oil Prices React

The attack on Kuwait’s power generation and water desalination station has significant implications for the region. These plants are essential for providing electricity and fresh water to the arid Gulf states. An earlier Iranian attack on a Kuwaiti desalination plant on March 30 was considered a major escalation at the time. The recent damage and disruption to power generation units underscore the vulnerability of such critical infrastructure.

The escalating tensions and reported attacks have had a swift impact on global energy markets. Following reports of the escalation on Friday (US time), benchmark Brent crude oil prices saw a 3 percent increase and were on track for their third consecutive weekly gain. This price surge adds political pressure, particularly on US President Donald Trump, in the lead-up to the November congressional elections.

UN Expresses Concern Over Escalation

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern regarding the escalating conflict, particularly the attacks on civilian infrastructure both within Iran and across the region. His spokesperson highlighted the UN chief’s worry over the widening scope of the hostilities and their potential humanitarian and economic consequences.

The recent events represent a dangerous intensification of the US-Iran conflict. The targeting of infrastructure and the increased activity around vital shipping lanes signal a critical juncture, with the potential for further destabilization and significant global economic repercussions if de-escalation measures are not urgently pursued.
