The terrifying ordeal began when a smoke alarm jolted the family awake. They managed to flee their Bulimba residence just moments before the blaze intensified, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Fire investigators were unable to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire, though they suspect it may have originated near the electrical box located beneath the house. “They think maybe it started where the electrical box was, so underneath the house, but we don’t know,” Bianca Zouppas shared with realestate.com.au.
The experience was profoundly traumatic. “It was such an intense experience. At the back of your mind, you’re like holy s***, I had a fire where I could have died a couple of weeks ago, my family could’ve been gone,” Goldman recounted. He described hearing the smoke alarm and initially mistaking it for a low battery warning before realizing the gravity of the situation with the presence of fire and smoke.
Transforming Tragedy into a Dream Home
Almost twelve months on, the site of the destruction is being transformed into the family’s envisioned dream home. The extensive renovation project involves removing smoke-damaged materials, restoring timber flooring, and fundamentally reimagining the home’s layout. A significant redesign of the living areas is underway, with plans to convert the former compact kitchen into a cozy sitting room. This space will then flow into a new master suite and a deck overlooking the river. The heart of the home will become a spacious, open-plan kitchen, complete with a striking floating island.
Bianca Zouppas expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I honestly love this house. It is so beautiful. It’s going to have so much character when we’re finished with it.” This rebuild signifies a hopeful new chapter for the family after an exceptionally challenging year.
The Crucial Role of Smoke Alarms
Mike Goldman has become a vocal advocate for home fire safety, particularly the importance of functioning smoke alarms. His survival, and that of his family, was directly attributed to the early warning provided by their smoke alarm. “If the [smoke] alarm hadn’t gone off, I wouldn’t be here today. I’m alive because of it,” he stated in an interview with the Courier Mail. This personal experience led him to accept a role as an ambassador for Checktember, a national campaign promoting smoke alarm safety.
Goldman urges the public to take such campaigns seriously. “That’s why I want everyone to take Checktember seriously – check your alarms, and make sure they’re interconnected so your whole house is protected,” he advised. He emphasized that interconnected alarms ensure that if one alarm is triggered, all alarms throughout the house sound, providing a more robust safety net.

While their Bulimba home is being rebuilt, the family is currently residing in a rental property in Ascot, Brisbane. They are eagerly anticipating the day they can return to their newly reconstructed home.
