A 16-year-old boy has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his mother and the attempted unlawful killing of his younger sister during his initial court appearances. The alleged incidents occurred in the Perth suburb of Bentley, Western Australia. The teenager appeared via video link in Perth Children’s Court on Wednesday, the day after the discovery of his mother’s body and his sister’s subsequent flight for help.

Allegations and Court Proceedings

During his first court appearance, the magistrate detailed the charges. “On the 21st July in Bentley it said you murdered (your mother),” the magistrate stated. The boy, visibly distressed, responded, “Why would I do that? I didn’t do that.” The court was also informed of a further charge: “There is a further charge that you attempted to unlawfully kill (your sister).” No formal pleas were entered during these initial hearings.

The court proceedings followed the discovery of a 35-year-old woman’s body at a residence in Bentley on Tuesday morning. Authorities were alerted after a 12-year-old girl, reportedly the boy’s sister, escaped the family home sustaining multiple stab wounds. She managed to reach a nearby highway, where passers-by administered first aid before she was transported to Perth Children’s Hospital. She is reported to be in a stable condition and receiving care for “very serious injuries,” according to WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded in custody at the Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre. He initially resisted appearing for his second court session but was eventually persuaded to participate via video link. A bail application was not made. The court heard that the boy is now under the care of the Department of Communities.

Legal Representation and Next Steps

Legal Aid lawyer Claire Rossi informed the court that an urgent application was in progress to secure the services of a senior lawyer to represent the boy on his criminal charges. Additionally, a separate lawyer will be required to handle the child protection proceedings concerning the boy’s welfare and placement.

Judge Wendy Hughes ordered both a mental health assessment and a report from the Department of Communities to be prepared before the boy’s next court appearance. The judge also requested that detention centre staff ensure the boy understands the court proceedings, acknowledging that they could be confusing for him.

Investigation and Community Response

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch described the incident as a “family violence homicide against family members.” He confirmed that the girl was receiving care and was “surrounded by family.” Police established a second crime scene on Albany Highway, the location where the injured girl was found.

The investigation is ongoing, with police speaking to neighbours in the aftermath of the incident. Western Australian Premier Roger Cook acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating it was a “distressing incident” for all involved, including families, friends, the local community, and first responders. He extended condolences to those affected by the “horrible incident.”

Background and Future Proceedings

The accused teenager was known to police prior to these allegations. The court heard that the boy walked away from the video camera part-way through one of his hearings, indicating potential distress or difficulty in engaging with the legal process.

The focus of the investigation remains on understanding the sequence of events that led to the mother’s death and the sister’s injuries. The involvement of family violence adds a layer of complexity to the case, and authorities are working to piece together the circumstances.

The boy’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 5 in the same court. The legal process will involve further examinations of the evidence, the mental state of the accused, and the child protection aspects related to his care and the welfare of his sister.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Bentley community and highlights the sensitive nature of cases involving minors and alleged family violence. The legal proceedings are expected to be lengthy, with multiple legal and psychological assessments planned.
