A former police officer, Thomas Odell, has been sentenced for an unprovoked assault where he grabbed a woman by the hair and pulled her towards the ground in a Canterbury nightclub. The incident, captured on video, occurred on February 21, shortly after Odell’s 30th birthday celebration at the Cuban nightclub. Odell, formerly of Kent Police, has since been dismissed from the force.
Nightclub Assault Details Emerge in Court
Margate Magistrates’ Court heard that the victim was socializing with friends when they began talking to a group that included Odell and other police officers. Odell reportedly revealed his police badge during the conversation. Without warning, Odell grabbed a fistful of the woman’s hair, pulling her head backward and forcing her towards the ground. Disturbing footage presented in court showed Odell holding the woman’s hair for approximately six seconds while smiling and continuing his conversation with others, seemingly unfazed by his actions.
As the victim attempted to regain her footing, Odell repeated the action, pulling her hair back a second time. The video depicted her arms flailing as she struggled to prevent herself from falling. Following the second pull, Odell released her hair and appeared to laugh or smile, raising his hand as if in apology. The victim, visibly distressed and in tears, immediately fled back into the nightclub seeking a way to leave.
Victim’s Lasting Trauma and Fear
In a statement read to the court, the victim described the profound psychological impact of the assault. She reported experiencing lingering pain in her head and soreness on the right side the following day. More significantly, the incident has left her feeling too frightened to go into the city alone, requiring her boyfriend or a trusted companion for support. She expressed a loss of trust in the police due to Odell’s abuse of his position. The court heard that while she suffered no visible injuries or hair loss, the psychological harm was substantial.
The victim’s boyfriend was also reportedly angered by the incident, and it took him considerable time to calm down after learning what had happened. Her statement highlighted that her pre-existing anxiety was exacerbated by the attack, stating, “I am unable to trust the police because he abused his position of power.”
Odell’s Defense and Remorse
Representing Odell, Simon Pettican stated that his client had consumed significantly more alcohol than usual due to his birthday celebration and had no recollection of the assault. Pettican emphasized that the act was out of character for Odell, who has since lost his job and is now pursuing training to become a bus driver. Odell expressed extreme remorse and shame for his actions and the negative attention brought upon himself and his former colleagues. He reportedly felt a desire to disappear when encountering former colleagues after the incident.
Pettican added that Odell believed he had a promising career ahead of him, which he had now jeopardized. The defense highlighted Odell’s current financial situation, noting he is receiving Universal Credit and is working towards his new career, expecting to be qualified by late autumn.
Court’s Sentencing and Judicial Remarks
District Judge William Nelson presided over the sentencing, stating there was no justification for attacking a “very vulnerable victim.” He characterized the assault as entirely unprovoked and deliberate, noting the repeat nature of the hair-pulling within the footage. The judge acknowledged Odell’s momentary loss of control but stressed that such actions are unacceptable, particularly for a serving police officer who is expected to uphold the highest standards.
Judge Nelson pointed out the risk of serious injury, given the victim’s reaction and the force used, and highlighted the significant psychological harm inflicted. He specifically mentioned the victim’s youth and her subsequent fear of going out without protection, underscoring the breach of public trust. While acknowledging Odell’s remorse and the severe consequence of losing his career, the judge imposed a 12-month community order requiring 150 hours of unpaid work. Odell was also ordered to pay £200 in compensation to the victim, to be paid at a rate of £20 per month due to his current benefit claims.
Police Force Response and Dismissal
Kent Police confirmed that Thomas Odell was dismissed following an accelerated misconduct hearing. Detective Superintendent Joanna Lay, from the force’s Professional Standards Department, stated that Odell, as a serving officer, was expected to adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct at all times. The force acted swiftly to investigate, arrest, and charge Odell upon receiving the report. He was suspended from duty immediately after the incident.
During sentencing, the prosecution noted the broader implications of the assault on public confidence in the police, particularly in relation to issues of “institutionalised misogyny.” The court heard that Odell initially denied the charge but later changed his plea to guilty ahead of a scheduled trial.
