The United Kingdom is poised to welcome a new contender in the compact electric vehicle market with the upcoming Smart #2. Set to be unveiled later this year, this diminutive electric car measures just 9 feet (2.79 meters) in length, positioning it as the shortest traditional electric car available. This makes it notably smaller than other compact electric rivals, such as the Fiat 500e, which measures just under 12 feet (3.63 meters).

A New Benchmark in Compact Electric Mobility

While the Citroen Ami, at 7.9 feet long, is legally classified as the shortest vehicle on UK roads, it falls under the category of a heavy quadricycle rather than a conventional car. The previous Smart EQ Fortwo model was also very compact, but its production concluded in 2024. The forthcoming Smart #2 aims to fill the void for a truly small, car-classified electric vehicle, designed specifically for urban environments.

Rigorous Testing and Global Debut

Smart has confirmed that the new #2 model is currently undergoing an extensive global testing program. This rigorous evaluation is designed to ensure the vehicle’s performance and durability in real-world conditions. Engineers are testing its agility on dedicated proving grounds, simulating urban challenges such as navigating obstacles, performing emergency lane changes, and handling low-grip wet road surfaces. The vehicle’s capabilities are being pushed to their limits to prepare for its official launch.

The world premiere of the Smart #2 is anticipated to take place at the Paris Motor Show in October. Following this international debut, UK dealerships are expected to receive the new model next year, potentially making it available to consumers within months of its official unveiling.

Key Features and Specifications

While Smart is keeping many details under wraps until the official launch, some key specifications for the #2 have been revealed. It is known that the new model will feature a 35.7kWh battery. This battery is reportedly capable of delivering an estimated range of up to 186 miles on a single charge, a respectable figure for a vehicle of its size and intended use. Furthermore, the charging capability is impressive, with the battery able to be replenished from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes, significantly reducing downtime for drivers.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Capability

A notable technological feature set to be included in the new Smart #2 is vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. This innovative function will allow drivers to use the car’s battery to power external devices. This could range from charging electronic gadgets and laptops to powering small appliances, offering a new level of utility for an electric car in this segment.

Positioning within the Smart Lineup and Pricing

The Smart #2 is slated to become the entry-level model in Smart’s evolving lineup. It will sit below the existing Smart #1 small SUV, the #3 coupe-SUV, and the larger #5 family SUV. This strategic positioning allows Smart to cater to a broader range of customer needs and preferences, from the most compact urban explorer to larger family-oriented vehicles.

Regarding pricing, the new Smart #2 is expected to fall within the range of £20,000 to £25,000. This pricing strategy aims to make the compact electric car an accessible option for a segment of the market looking for an affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly mode of transport, particularly for city driving.

The Future of Urban Electric Commuting

The introduction of the Smart #2 signifies a continued trend towards smaller, more efficient electric vehicles designed for the demands of modern urban living. Its compact dimensions are ideal for navigating congested city streets, finding parking, and reducing overall energy consumption. The combination of its small footprint, electric powertrain, and advanced features like V2L capability suggests that the Smart #2 could become a popular choice for commuters and city dwellers seeking a practical and sustainable transportation solution.

As the automotive industry continues its shift towards electrification, manufacturers are exploring diverse vehicle types to meet varied consumer requirements. The Smart #2 represents a bold step in this direction, focusing on extreme compactness without compromising on essential electric vehicle technology and functionality. Its arrival next year will undoubtedly be watched closely by consumers and competitors alike, potentially setting a new standard for the shortest traditional electric car on the market.
