Jamie Gittens is embracing the increased competition on Chelsea’s left wing, viewing the arrival of record signing Morgan Rogers as a positive step towards the club reclaiming major honours. Rogers, acquired from Aston Villa for a reported £117 million, represents the most expensive transfer for an English player, but Gittens sees it as a catalyst for success.

Gittens Welcomes Competition and Title Ambitions

Speaking pitch-side at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium during an open training session, Gittens expressed his enthusiasm for the club’s ambitious goals. “We want to win everything – that is our ambition, to win the Premier League, the FA Cup, win anything that we’re in,” Gittens stated. “Bringing in a player like Morgan will hopefully raise the bar to win titles.” He views the competition with Rogers, a fellow alumnus of the Manchester City academy, as a healthy dynamic that will push the team forward.

The 21-year-old Englishman garnered significant applause from the 4,500 Chelsea fans present when he paused an interview to sign the shirt of a young pitch invader seeking an autograph from teammate Estevao Willian. This gesture was warmly received by the supporters, highlighting a connection Gittens is eager to build upon.

Overcoming Injury and Setting Personal Goals

Gittens’ debut season at Stamford Bridge was significantly hampered by a hamstring injury sustained in January, curtailing his initial impact after a £52 million move from Borussia Dortmund. He is now nearing full fitness, reporting himself at “92 per cent” and feeling more confident as his body recovers. “I’m feeling much better, more confident now my body is better, the hamstrings are good, so I’m waiting for the season to start,” he shared. He spent the summer training intensely in Portugal and Marbella to prepare for his return.

Describing the hamstring injury as a significant challenge, particularly as it was his first such issue, Gittens reflected on his recovery process. “It was a challenge at the start, but I’m better now so I feel more confident. It was hard for me, but I’m here now and hopefully I can get back and tell myself that I did good in the situation.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Gittens has set personal objectives, which he has documented privately. While not disclosing the specifics, he emphasized his desire to succeed at Chelsea and demonstrate his capabilities. “This is such a big club. I want to succeed here. I need to show people what I can do. I’ll keep working hard. I’ve shown glimpses, I would say. Small bits. But this season will be a good season.”

Training Insights and Alonso’s Influence

During the training session in Sydney, Gittens was observed participating in drills focused on delivering crosses from both the left and right wings, alongside teammates like Cole Palmer and academy graduate Landon Emenalo on the left, and Estevao, Marco Palestra, and Aaron Anselmino on the right. The club is also set to welcome new set-piece specialist Austin MacPhee, who is expected to join from Aston Villa, while Bernardo Cueva transitions to an off-pitch role.

Chelsea’s pre-season tour includes matches against Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham in Sydney, followed by a tour of Asia. New head coach Xabi Alonso was actively involved in the training sessions, demonstrating his coaching acumen.

Alonso has imparted specific guidance to Gittens, encouraging him to maintain his attacking mindset. “He wants me to keep being positive, to keep on taking on players, to keep on creating chances and to keep on pushing myself to the maximum,” Gittens revealed. He praised Alonso’s approach, noting his individual attention to players. “He’s a very nice guy. He talks to us individually, speaks to us about what we can improve on, what we can do better. As a player, that’s all you want.” Gittens believes Alonso’s tactical approach, which often utilizes wingers, will suit his playing style.

Focusing on Personal Development

When asked about the departure of Alejandro Garnacho, who struggled to make an impact on the left wing after his £40 million move from Manchester United and has since been moved on by Chelsea, Gittens reiterated his focus on his own performance. “To be honest, I just look at myself,” he stated. “I don’t look at anyone else. I just focus on myself and try to be better.”

Having previously faced Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen during his time at Dortmund, Gittens recognizes the Spanish manager’s tactical expertise and is eager to thrive under his leadership at Chelsea. He is determined to secure his place in the team, even with the significant competition posed by the arrival of Morgan Rogers.

Conclusion

Jamie Gittens is poised for a significant season with Chelsea, driven by a desire to contribute to the club’s pursuit of silverware. Despite facing tough competition and overcoming injury setbacks, his positive outlook, personal ambition, and alignment with head coach Xabi Alonso’s vision suggest he is ready to make a substantial impact.
