A father has spoken of his profound grief after his wife and teenage daughter tragically drowned while attempting to rescue his young nephew who got into difficulty in the water at West Mersea beach. Dr. Mansur Rahman, a London-based teacher and community figure, shared his devastation following the loss of his wife, Shelina Rahman, in her 40s, and their 15-year-old daughter, Sameeha.
Tragic Seaside Incident Claims Two Lives
The devastating incident occurred on Wednesday when a family group experienced trouble in the sea off West Mersea beach. Shelina Rahman and Sameeha were among several individuals who got into distress. Despite efforts to save them, both mother and daughter tragically lost their lives. The family had been on a holiday trip when the tragedy unfolded.
Dr. Rahman, who is also known as the leader of Jubo Dal UK, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), expressed his sorrow in a statement. “It is with profound sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that my beloved daughter and my beloved wife passed away following a tragic accident on Wednesday,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. “By the will of Allah (SWT), they returned to their creator after drowning in the water.”
A Rescue Attempt Gone Wrong
Essex Police confirmed that the victims were a mother and daughter from London. Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher stated that initial investigations suggest the pair entered the water to help a seven-year-old boy who was struggling. The boy was rescued and taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. Sadly, Shelina and Sameeha could not be saved.
DCI Pitcher added, “My thoughts, and those of my team, are with the friends and family of the woman and girl who died yesterday. We can now confirm they were a mother and daughter from London and we are supporting their family in what is an unimaginable time.” He further elaborated, “At this stage, we believe they were trying to help a seven-year-old boy who had got into difficulties.”
All individuals involved in the incident were related to each other, according to police. Detectives are continuing their investigation, speaking with numerous witnesses to piece together the exact circumstances leading up to the tragedy. Information suggests that around 18 emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene.
Family and Community Support
Dr. Rahman acknowledged the outpouring of support from his community. “I would also like to thank everyone in our community who has called, sent messages, and reached out to support us during this difficult time,” he stated. “I have not been able to answer many phone calls, but please know that I have not intentionally ignored anyone. The overwhelming support, love, and prayers from all of you mean more to us than words can express.”
The funeral for Shelina and Sameeha was held over the weekend in London. Dr. Rahman was visibly emotional as he carried a coffin during the service. He shared that other members of the family were also affected by the incident. “My nephew remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and his father is by his side at the hospital,” he revealed. “By the grace of God, my elder son, my elder daughter, and some other relatives survived and have returned home safely.”
