AC Milan has issued a strong statement to refute false online rumors claiming the death of club icon Franco Baresi. The legendary defender, a symbol of the club for decades, is alive and well, according to an official club announcement released on Wednesday. The misinformation prompted a wave of tributes and condolences from fans and public figures alike, highlighting Baresi’s enduring legacy.

AC Milan Addresses False Reports

The club moved swiftly to quash the unfounded speculation that began circulating on social media and some news outlets. Citing a report from the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport as a catalyst for the rumors, AC Milan emphasized that the news was entirely untrue. The club expressed its solidarity with Baresi and his family during what it described as a “difficult and delicate time,” urging the public and media to respect their privacy.

“AC Milan denies the false reports concerning Franco Baresi that have begun circulating in recent minutes,” the club stated. “Franco is going through a difficult and delicate time, and the Club stands firmly alongside him and his family. We urge everyone to respect their privacy and refrain from spreading entirely unfounded information.”

Franco Baresi: A Club Legend’s Career

Franco Baresi, often affectionately known by the nickname ‘Piscinin,’ is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history. He spent his entire professional career with AC Milan, from 1977 to 1997, making over 700 appearances for the club. His unwavering loyalty and exceptional skill on the field earned him legendary status among the Rossoneri faithful.

During his illustrious career, Baresi captained AC Milan for an impressive 15 seasons, leading the team to numerous triumphs. His trophy cabinet includes:

  • Six Serie A titles
  • Three European Cups (now UEFA Champions League)
  • Two Intercontinental Cups
  • Four Italian Super Cups

Beyond his club achievements, Baresi was a key member of the Italian national team. He was part of the squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup and represented Italy in three World Cups, earning 81 caps for his country.

Recent Public Appearances and Health Concerns

Baresi’s most recent public appearance was as a torchbearer at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, an event held at the San Siro stadium. He carried the Olympic flame alongside his friend and former Inter Milan rival, Beppe Bergomi. This appearance underscores his continued connection to the sporting world.

Reports indicate that Baresi has been undergoing medical treatment. In August 2025, he underwent surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule and subsequently received cancer-prevention immunotherapy. According to Italian sports publication Gazzetta dello Sport, he is currently under observation at the Humanitas hospital in Rozzano, near Milan. It is understood that his current health status led him to withdraw from visiting AC Milan’s pre-season training camp at Milanello earlier this month.

Impact of Misinformation

The incident highlights the rapid spread of misinformation in the digital age and its potential to cause distress. The false news about Baresi’s passing led to widespread expressions of grief and admiration, with many prominent figures, including Italy’s deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini, sharing tributes before the truth emerged. The club’s statement serves not only to correct the record but also to protect Baresi and his family from further distress caused by these unfounded rumors.

Baresi’s Post-Playing Career

Following his retirement from playing, Baresi has remained an integral part of AC Milan. He was appointed honorary vice-president of the club, a testament to his unparalleled contribution and standing. He was also voted AC Milan’s Player of the Century in 1999, a fitting recognition of his legendary status.

The club’s firm denial and plea for privacy aim to allow Baresi and his family the space they need during this challenging period. The overwhelming outpouring of support, albeit initially based on false information, demonstrates the deep affection and respect the football world holds for Franco Baresi.
