Supporters of WNBA player Sophie Cunningham organized demonstrations in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, aligning with a broader controversy surrounding the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports. The protests coincided with the Indiana Fever’s game against the Portland Fire at the Moda Center.

Protests in Portland

Videos circulating on social media platforms, particularly from a page titled ‘Women Are Real,’ appeared to show a modest turnout for the Portland protest. Participants held signs expressing solidarity with Cunningham, who has publicly stated her opposition to transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. One individual was observed making an ‘X’ gesture with their arms, a symbol associated with the organizing group.

The organizer, Amy Sousa, described the group as a “cheer squad” preparing welcome signs, balloons, and cookies. Sousa has been pictured wearing apparel from XX-XY Athletics, a brand that advocates against the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports. This event followed similar planned demonstrations, including one scheduled for Sunday in Minneapolis ahead of the Indiana Fever’s game against the Minnesota Lynx.

Seattle Incident Sparks WNBA Scrutiny

The Portland protest occurred days after a significant incident at a WNBA game in Seattle. During the Indiana Fever’s victory over the Seattle Storm, two young supporters of Sophie Cunningham were present courtside with signs advocating for the protection of women’s sports. This display led to a heated confrontation with Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton.

Reports indicate that Keaton approached the young fans and allegedly used expletive-laden language, calling them “f***ing insane.” The Seattle Storm organization subsequently issued an apology for the incident. In response to Keaton’s actions, the WNBA announced a five-game ban from her team’s home games.

Beyond Keaton’s involvement, other fans at the Seattle game were reportedly heard verbally confronting the young supporters. One man was captured on video directing aggressive remarks toward the fans and reporter Brandi Kruse, who had helped organize the demonstration. Video shared by Fox News captured voices calling for security to intervene, while some attendees were heard booing the young activists. Kruse noted that the girls were simply “teenage girls” expressing their views.

Another uncorroborated report suggested an angry Storm supporter may have spat in the direction of a Fever fan after the game, which concluded with Indiana winning 105-95.

Broader Context and Athlete Statements

The Minneapolis demonstration is reportedly being spearheaded by Jennifer Sey, the founder of XX-XY Athletics and a former Team USA gymnastics champion. Sey has been a vocal advocate for the ‘save women’s sports’ movement and has previously commented on issues surrounding female athletics, including the attention on Caitlin Clark.

The debate intensified recently when Sophie Cunningham shared her perspective in an interview, stating that women should not have to compete against individuals she referred to as “biological men.” The two young girls seen courtside in Seattle were wearing t-shirts from XX-XY Athletics.

In the wake of the Seattle confrontation, Cunningham herself addressed the situation on social media. She emphasized inclusivity, writing, “I truly believe there is a safe space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table!” She also commended the young fans for their courage, stating, “Bravo to those girls for standing up for what they believe. You’ll be hearing from me soon.” Cunningham also expressed her disapproval of the Storm co-owner’s reaction, calling it “truly embarrassing” and indicative of poor leadership.

Ongoing Debate in Women’s Sports

The WNBA’s engagement with the trans athlete issue reflects a larger, ongoing discussion within the sports world. Leagues and governing bodies are grappling with developing policies that balance inclusivity with fairness in women’s categories. The events in Seattle and the subsequent protests highlight the passionate, and at times contentious, nature of this debate among players, fans, and team management.

As the Indiana Fever continue their season, the conversations sparked by these incidents are likely to persist, underscoring the complexities of navigating these sensitive issues in professional sports.
