Eastbourne residents and visitors can experience unique jazz performances this August as a temporary circus tent in Helen Gardens transforms into a vibrant jazz club for two special afternoons. The venue, a striking red and white striped circus tent, will host the Jazz in a Circus Tent events on Friday, August 7, and Sunday, August 9. These afternoon sessions promise an eclectic mix of jazz standards, classic American songbook tunes, and Latin-inspired melodies, all presented by accomplished musicians.

A Unique Venue for Live Music

The circus tent, a prominent landmark easily visible from the promenade at Helen Gardens, King Edward’s Parade, BN20 7XL, will be in place for one week. While primarily serving as the performance space for The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company’s production of ‘The Wife’ each evening and during select matinees, it opens its doors to jazz enthusiasts on two specific afternoons. This temporary setup offers a novel and intimate setting for enjoying live music, distinct from traditional concert halls.

Friday Afternoon: The Carl Greenwood Trio

On Friday, August 7, the stage will be set for the Carl Greenwood Trio. This piano-based ensemble features Carl Greenwood on keys, Andy Williams on guitar, and Nigel Thomas on bass. Described as the bedrock of modern jazz, this trio brings together musicians with extensive experience in this format and a proven track record of playing together. Carl Greenwood’s diverse career includes performances in West End shows, tours with various jazz and pop bands, appearances at renowned UK jazz venues, and engagements for private functions. The trio is also a familiar presence in Eastbourne, regularly performing for Sunday lunches at The Langham Hotel. For this event, they will be presenting jazz standards and beloved repertoire from the classic American songbook, offering a sophisticated and swinging performance.

Sunday Afternoon: The Perello Duo

The musical focus shifts on Sunday, August 9, with a performance by The Perello Duo. This captivating duo features Mike Hughes on vibraphone and Eleanor Kelly on guitar. Both are accomplished solo artists who have joined forces to create a unique performance that has garnered acclaim across the UK. Their program is set to be a delightful journey through various genres, encompassing classical pieces, Latin rhythms, and jazz standards. Audiences can anticipate beautifully arranged music from composers such as Erik Satie, Laurie Randolph, Carmen Guzmán, and Antônio Carlos Jobim, among others.

Mike Hughes: Champion of the Vibraphone

Mike Hughes is dedicated to expanding the appreciation and understanding of the vibraphone. His work includes collaborations with contemporary classical composers and prominent figures in the British jazz scene, showcasing the instrument’s versatility and expressive potential.

Eleanor Kelly: A Celebrated Guitarist

Eleanor Kelly is a highly experienced performer whose notable engagements span international festivals and prestigious venues. Her performance history includes appearances at the Palacio del Portalet in Spain, the Uppsala Internationella Gitarrfestival in Sweden, and the Finding A Voice festival in Ireland. She also made her London debut at Kings Place, premiering works commissioned specifically for her by the International Guitar Foundation.

Andy Panayi: A Master of Saxophone and Flute

Adding his considerable talent to both afternoon performances is Andy Panayi, a celebrated saxophonist and flutist with over four decades of experience at the forefront of British jazz. A multi-award winner, Panayi has shared stages with legendary musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, John Dankworth, and Wynton Marsalis. His extensive performance credits include regular appearances with the BBC Big Band, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Stan Tracey Big Band, and the Ronnie Scott’s Orchestra.

Panayi’s Versatility and Local Connections

Panayi is proficient on all types of flutes and saxophones and currently leads several of his own ensembles, performing both jazz and classical music. He is also an active composer, creating commissioned works and arrangements for his bands. Locally, in Eastbourne, Panayi is involved in music education, teaching jazz improvisation and saxophone to groups of musicians and directing a big band. He is also a co-founder of the Splash Point Jazz Club at The Fishermen’s Club in Eastbourne, further cementing his commitment to the local jazz community.

Event Details and Tickets

The Jazz in a Circus Tent events are scheduled for Friday, August 7, and Sunday, August 9. Doors will open at 1:30 PM, with the music commencing at 2:00 PM and concluding around 4:30 PM. Tickets are available for purchase on the day of the event, priced at £10. The unique venue is located at Helen Gardens, King Edward’s Parade, Eastbourne, BN20 7XL.

Conclusion

These two afternoon jazz sessions in Eastbourne’s circus tent offer a unique opportunity to enjoy high-caliber live music in an unconventional and memorable setting. With performances from the accomplished Carl Greenwood Trio and the dynamic Perello Duo, further enhanced by the presence of jazz luminary Andy Panayi, these August events are set to be a highlight for music lovers in the region.
