WWE legend The Undertaker, real name Mark Calaway, has disclosed a tense backstage encounter with former WWE chairman Vince McMahon that nearly escalated into a physical altercation. The incident occurred when Calaway, experiencing personal difficulties, sought a moment of understanding from McMahon, only to receive a blunt and unsympathetic response that ignited his anger.
A Legendary Career and a Unique Relationship
Throughout his illustrious 30-year career, The Undertaker established himself as one of professional wrestling’s most iconic and enduring characters. The Undertaker persona, arguably one of Vince McMahon’s most successful creative creations, became synonymous with WWE. Despite their on-screen rivalries, including a notable Buried Alive match at Survivor Series 2003, McMahon and Calaway maintained a close bond behind the scenes.
Calaway, who officially retired from in-ring competition in November 2020, had transitioned to a part-time schedule in the years leading up to his retirement. During this period, he would occasionally attend WWE events, particularly those held near his home, to reconnect with colleagues and friends, including McMahon.
The Backstage Confrontation
It was during one such visit, while Calaway was navigating a particularly challenging period in his personal life, that the incident with McMahon took place. He recounted the experience on his ‘Six Feet Under’ podcast, detailing how he approached McMahon’s office simply to say hello and check in.
“I went into his office just to say hello and, you know, see how he was doing,” Calaway explained. “Anyway, we get to talking and I kinda start going off and telling him all this stuff.” Calaway began to share the personal struggles he was facing, expecting a degree of empathy from the veteran promoter.
However, McMahon’s reaction was far from supportive. “He looks at me – and it was as straight a face as it could be – he goes, ‘You know what, Mark? I really think you need to quit feeling sorry for yourself.’” McMahon’s blunt assessment continued, “Yeah, you’re feeling sorry for yourself. Man up!”
A Sense of Rage and a Stark Warning
The Undertaker described feeling an immediate surge of anger and disbelief at McMahon’s dismissive response. “There was a sense of rage that came over me at that moment,” Calaway admitted. “Like, ‘Man, I thought me and you are friends. I’m talking to you as a friend. I’m not talking to you as my boss. I’m just letting you know what’s going on in my life.'”
Calaway, a seven-time world champion, conveyed his profound displeasure to McMahon, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. “I did tell him, I was like, ‘You know if you were anybody else, anybody else, we’d probably be fighting right now. No one talks to me like that. You don’t talk to me like that.’”
McMahon, unfazed, reportedly retorted, “Well, damn it, somebody needs to.” This exchange further escalated the tension, with Calaway noting, “I’m like, ‘Man, you are really pushing it.’”
Reflection and McMahon’s Insight
Despite the intense emotions of the moment, The Undertaker later acknowledged that McMahon’s harsh words, while unwelcome, contained an element of truth. He eventually reached out to McMahon, admitting that while he still wished he could have confronted him physically, he recognized the validity of McMahon’s challenge.
“I think I finally called him, and I was like, ‘You know what? I still wish I’d whooped your ass, but I think you’re right. You’re damn right I was. Good to have you back.’” Calaway reflected on McMahon’s unique ability to understand his needs, stating, “He knew, with me, I guess he knew when I needed a foot in the ass or whether I needed a hug. He was always pretty much right on all of that stuff.”
Later Years and Legal Troubles
Vince McMahon stepped down from his role in WWE in early 2024 following a lawsuit filed by a former employee alleging sexual misconduct and trafficking. Despite these later controversies, Calaway has indicated that his relationship with McMahon remains amicable. The WWE Hall of Famer was seen attending McMahon’s 80th birthday celebration the previous year, suggesting a continued, albeit complex, connection between the two wrestling icons.
