Manchester United is reportedly pivoting its transfer strategy, with manager Michael Carrick and the club’s hierarchy, including INEOS representatives, now prioritizing defensive reinforcements over a third midfield signing. This shift comes after the recent acquisitions of midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, who are set to join the existing midfield contingent of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. While further squad improvements are anticipated, the club appears poised to reallocate funds previously earmarked for another midfielder towards strengthening other areas, particularly the defense.

Defensive Reinforcement Takes Priority

According to reports from The Telegraph, Manchester United has expressed interest in signing Giorgio Scalvini, a highly-rated 22-year-old defender from Atalanta. Scalvini has already amassed 137 appearances for the Italian Serie A club, demonstrating significant experience at a young age. His potential arrival would address the team’s defensive vulnerabilities, which were highlighted by injury concerns affecting key players like Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt during the previous season.

The Italian international is valued at approximately £32 million and is reportedly well-known to Manchester United’s decision-makers, having been scouted by the club previously. Scalvini’s versatility is also noted, as he is capable of playing in a defensive midfield role, potentially offering additional tactical flexibility to Carrick’s squad.

This reported pursuit of Scalvini suggests a departure from the initial plan to sign a third midfielder. The funds that would have been allocated to such a transfer are now being considered for defensive acquisitions. Consequently, any previous speculation linking Manchester United with players like Alex Scott from Bournemouth, for whom Chelsea had reportedly made a £64 million offer earlier in the transfer window, is likely to be dismissed.

Forward Line Considerations Amidst Potential Zirkzee Departure

While Manchester United has not yet made significant additions to its forward line this summer, beyond the return of Marcus Rashford to fitness, the club is reportedly open to allowing striker Joshua Zirkzee to leave. Sky Sport Italy has indicated that Juventus is interested in securing Zirkzee on a season-long loan deal.

The 25-year-old Dutch forward has found consistent first-team opportunities challenging since his £36.5 million transfer in 2024. He has scored nine goals in 75 appearances across all competitions during his tenure at the club. Reports suggest that Zirkzee has already given his consent to a potential move to the Italian club.

The limited playing time for Zirkzee in the previous year is attributed to the strong competition within the squad, with players such as Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo also vying for attacking positions. A loan move could provide Zirkzee with more regular game time, while potentially freeing up resources or squad space for Manchester United.

Strategic Reallocation of Transfer Budget

The apparent shift in transfer priorities underscores a strategic decision by Manchester United’s management to address immediate squad needs. The club’s performance last season likely prompted a re-evaluation of where additional investment would yield the most significant improvements.

By focusing on strengthening the defense, particularly with a versatile player like Scalvini, Carrick aims to build a more robust and resilient team. The acquisition of a proven center-back could provide much-needed stability and depth, especially considering the team’s injury record in that department.

The decision to potentially forgo a third midfielder, despite earlier intentions, suggests that the club is satisfied with its current midfield options or believes that other areas of the squad require more urgent attention. The financial flexibility gained from not pursuing another midfielder could be crucial in securing a high-quality defensive signing or investing in other positions.

Future Transfer Windows and Squad Development

This strategic adjustment in the current transfer window may also indicate a longer-term vision for squad development. By prioritizing defensive solidity, Manchester United could be laying the groundwork for a more balanced and competitive team in the seasons to come.

The club’s transfer activity will continue to be closely monitored as the window progresses. While the focus appears to have shifted towards defense, it remains possible that further moves could be made in other areas, depending on player availability and evolving squad needs. The successful integration of new signings like Santos and Tielemans, alongside the potential arrival of a new defender, will be key to Manchester United’s prospects under Michael Carrick.

Ultimately, the club’s ability to adapt its transfer strategy based on current circumstances and future ambitions will be a critical factor in its success. The reported interest in Giorgio Scalvini signals a clear intent to bolster the backline, a move that could prove instrumental in achieving the club’s objectives.
