New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced a hostile reception, including boos and profanity, when he appeared at a pro-police event in Staten Island on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred shortly before a prominent local artist, Scott LoBaido, who had intended to question the mayor, suffered a cardiac arrest. The event, part of the National Night Out Against Crime celebration, took place at Midland Beach.

Mayor Mamdani’s Brief Remarks Met with Jeers

Mayor Mamdani’s appearance at the 43rd annual National Night Out Against Crime celebration was brief, lasting less than a minute. As he took the stage, a significant portion of the crowd, estimated to be among the more than 3,500 attendees, began shouting and booing, urging him to leave. Despite the vocal opposition, Mamdani offered a brief greeting, stating, “Happy Night Out Against Crime. It’s amazing to be here for the Staten Island community!” He also acknowledged Scott LoBaido, a local artist known for his patriotic demonstrations and veteran advocacy, and other local officials present.

“It’s a real pleasure to be here. Happy National Night Out Against Crime. God bless everyone. Thank you,” Mamdani concluded his remarks before exiting the stage. The jeering continued as he departed.

Artist Suffers Cardiac Arrest After Attempting to Question Mayor

Shortly before 7 p.m., during the event, Scott LoBaido experienced a cardiac arrest, as confirmed by an FDNY spokesperson. He was reported to be in critical but stable condition later that evening. According to a bystander who spoke to local media, LoBaido had attended the celebration with a group intending to question Mayor Mamdani regarding his administration’s plan to halt a phased approach to hiring 5,000 additional NYPD officers. LoBaido had expressed his disapproval of the mayor’s presence at the event on social media, citing Mamdani’s previous actions as having “humiliating” the police and putting their “lives in danger.”

The witness recounted that LoBaido attempted to approach Mamdani as the mayor was leaving the stage but was prevented from doing so by officers assigned to the event. Shortly after being held back, LoBaido reportedly stated he was not feeling well and needed to sit down. He then knelt before collapsing onto his back. Emergency responders were quick to provide aid, performing CPR and chest compressions before administering oxygen and transporting him to a nearby hospital. The bystander praised the first responders for their swift and effective actions.

LoBaido Recovers and Comments on Incident

Later on Tuesday night, LoBaido himself provided an update on his condition via a social media post. He shared a photograph of himself in the hospital, wearing a nasal oxygen tube and giving a defiant gesture to the camera, indicating he was recovering. This post suggested he was well enough to acknowledge the events of the day.

National Night Out Against Crime: Purpose and Activities

The National Night Out Against Crime is an annual initiative held at numerous locations across New York City. Its stated purpose, according to the NYPD website, is to foster “police-community partnerships to help make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.” The event typically includes family-friendly activities designed to encourage positive interactions between law enforcement and residents. At the Midland Beach location, attendees enjoyed amenities such as bounce houses, face painting, food, performances by local dance groups, a puppet show, and arts and crafts stations for children.

N.Y.P.D. Commissioner’s Remarks

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who was appointed by the previous administration and retained by Mayor Mamdani, also addressed the attendees. She expressed gratitude to the officers for their service and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the police and the community. “Public safety is something that we all build together, and nights like this remind us of the relationship of police officers, neighbors, community members and elected officials,” Commissioner Tisch stated.

Staten Island’s Political Landscape

Mayor Mamdani’s challenging reception in Staten Island can be partly attributed to the borough’s distinct political leanings. While Mayor Mamdani secured a victory in the recent election, Staten Island has historically been a more conservative area within the largely Democratic city. The borough’s voting patterns indicated a preference against Mamdani’s candidacy in the last election, contrasting with his citywide success.
