London has officially entered the competition to host WorldPride in 2032, a significant international LGBTQ+ event. The bid is strategically timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of London’s inaugural Pride march, which occurred in 1972. Should the capital be selected, it would follow Cape Town, the designated host for WorldPride 2028. Amsterdam is hosting the current year’s event, and it was during a reception at the British Council in Amsterdam that London’s campaign was formally launched.

The Bid for WorldPride 2032: A Community-Driven Initiative

The effort to bring WorldPride to London is spearheaded by a coalition including Pride in London, UK Black Pride, and Outernet London. This collaborative bid also benefits from the support of the Mayor of London and TripAdvisor. WorldPride, an event licensed by InterPride, is held biennially and unites global Pride marches, cultural festivals, conferences, and human rights discussions in a designated host city.

Breaking from traditional bid processes, the London campaign is actively seeking input from the LGBTQ+ community to help shape its proposal. Individuals worldwide are invited to contribute photographs that explore themes of identity, belonging, and allyship. These submissions will be compiled into a large-scale digital mosaic, symbolizing the collective spirit of Pride through thousands of individual contributions. In parallel, a competition is underway to design a distinctive logo for the London WorldPride 2032 campaign, specifically calling for entries from UK designers. The winning logo will serve as the official branding for the event if London secures the hosting rights.

Key Details of the Competitions:

  • Photography Project: Invites global submissions exploring identity, belonging, and allyship.
  • Logo Design Competition: Open to UK designers to create the official WorldPride London 2032 branding.
  • Prizes: The winning designer will receive £3,000.
  • Deadlines: Entries for both competitions close on September 25th.
  • Announcements: The winning photography installation and logo design are expected to be revealed in early October.

Community at the Core of the Bid

Rebecca Paisis, interim CEO of Pride in London, emphasized the foundational role of community involvement in the bid’s strategy. “Pride has always been powered by community,” Paisis stated. “As we launch London’s bid for WorldPride 2032, we want our community to help shape its future from day one. We’re looking for bold, inspiring designs that capture London’s unique spirit and photographs that celebrate Pride in all its forms across the world.”

Paisis further highlighted the historical significance of the bid, noting its connection to the upcoming 60th anniversary of London’s first Pride march. “This project gives every generation an opportunity to leave their mark on what could become one of the defining moments in our movement’s history,” she added.

Historical Context of London’s Pride Movement

London’s first official Pride march took place on July 1st, 1972, an event that occurred three years after the pivotal Stonewall uprising in New York City. What began as a modest demonstration with a few hundred participants has since evolved into one of Europe’s most significant LGBTQ+ events. Recent figures indicate that the Pride in London parade attracts approximately 1.7 million spectators, with over 30,000 individuals participating in the march itself.

Interested individuals can find more information and submit entries for the community photography project and the logo design competition via the Pride in London website. The selection of London as a host city would mark a significant milestone, celebrating decades of progress and continued advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights on a global stage.
