A spokesperson for Rogers highlighted that this event is part of a concerning increase in vandalism and attempted theft targeting the company’s network infrastructure nationwide. “Early this morning, thieves intentionally cut some of our fibre lines in an attempt to steal copper, causing significant damage and interrupting internet, TV and home phone services for customers in some Calgary neighbourhoods,” the spokesperson stated. Calgary police confirmed they were alerted around 6:20 a.m. on Monday regarding the severed wires. Rogers deployed six crews, comprising over 20 technicians, throughout Monday to address the damage and work towards restoring services. Edy Ukbakha, owner of Edy Hair Planet Barber Shop in Manchester Industrial, considered closing for the day due to the critical role the internet plays in his operations. “I couldn’t take payments because the payment system is attached to the internet,” Ukbakha explained. He noted that his payment system failed to process transactions after the first two customers, highlighting the immediate financial consequences of the outage.
