In July, former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly departed from Ankara, Turkey, on a clandestine military flight, a departure that differed significantly from the publicly announced itinerary. While the White House indicated he was traveling aboard the official Air Force One, reports suggest an elaborate security operation was enacted, involving the use of a catering truck to move the former president to a separate, smaller aircraft. This extraordinary measure was reportedly prompted by credible intelligence regarding an Iranian assassination threat.

Elaborate Departure from Ankara

The operation unfolded as Trump concluded his visit to Turkey for a NATO summit. He had arrived in Ankara using a newly refurbished Boeing 747, a jet donated by Qatar and outfitted with advanced security features. This aircraft was intended to serve as a temporary replacement for the aging presidential fleet, though its rapid upgrades and associated costs had previously drawn scrutiny. The trip itself occurred amidst heightened tensions with Iran, a nation bordering Turkey.

However, for his departure from Ankara, Trump opted to use an older, familiar Air Force One aircraft. He announced this decision on social media, stating he would fly the classic blue and white jet for nostalgic reasons. The newer, Qatari-donated plane was scheduled to make a separate stop at RAF Mildenhall in Britain, allowing U.S. service members to tour the aircraft. This arrangement created a public perception of a standard departure, masking the subsequent secret movement.

Catering Truck as a Decoy

According to reports citing U.S. officials familiar with the operation, after Trump boarded the older Air Force One in front of news cameras in Ankara, he was secretly transported via an airport catering truck to a waiting Air Force C-32A, a military variant of a Boeing 757. This maneuver was part of a broader deception strategy designed to obscure his true departure route and aircraft.

The Washington Post and The New York Times, referencing U.S. officials and corroborating documents, detailed the operation. The C-32A carrying Trump reportedly flew directly to Britain, arriving at approximately 10:20 PM local time. The older Air Force One, serving as a decoy and carrying the press corps and some White House staff, arrived at the same British airbase minutes later.

Press Deceived During Flight

Journalists traveling with the former president were reportedly instructed to keep their window shades closed during the flight. This unusual directive led to questions later. When asked about the closed shades, Trump reportedly told reporters that they were likely on a “dangerous flight,” adding, “But if I go, you go. Right?” This comment, made in hindsight, alluded to the security concerns that necessitated the covert operation.

The exact method by which Trump transitioned from the C-32A back to the older Air Force One upon arrival in Britain remains unclear. However, the former president was seen descending the stairs of the decoy Air Force One at 10:56 PM UK time. He acknowledged the press with a peace sign but did not engage in conversation before greeting service members and proceeding to the newer, Qatari-donated aircraft.

Security Concerns and Official Response

The decision to employ such an elaborate ruse was reportedly driven by a credible threat from Iran. The escalating hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, a nation with a stated animosity towards the former president, underscored the need for heightened security measures during international travel.

In response to inquiries about the secret flight, a White House spokesperson, Communications Director Steve Cheung, issued a statement. He affirmed that the Qatari-donated jet is equipped with robust security protocols to safeguard the president and his staff. Cheung reiterated Trump’s own statements about facing threats from adversaries, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to utilizing all available resources to counter such dangers. This statement was consistent with remarks provided to The Washington Post.

Historical Precedent for Deception

The use of decoys and covert travel arrangements for presidential security is not unprecedented. In 2000, President Bill Clinton reportedly flew into Pakistan on an unmarked executive jet while his official Air Force One served as a decoy. This historical parallel highlights a recurring strategy employed by U.S. administrations to mitigate security risks during sensitive international engagements.

The incident involving Trump’s departure from Turkey underscores the complex security challenges faced by former presidents, particularly those who remain prominent figures on the global stage. The combination of advanced technology, traditional security protocols, and strategic deception continues to be a critical component of ensuring the safety of high-profile individuals.
