Former Arsenal goalkeeper Graham Stack has expressed significant surprise and doubt regarding the club’s decision to sign Illan Meslier from Leeds United during the recent summer transfer window. Meslier joined Arsenal on a free transfer in July, following the expiration of his contract with Leeds the previous month. The French goalkeeper spent six years at Elland Road, accumulating 215 appearances across all competitions and playing a role in the club’s two promotions to the Premier League in 2020 and 2025. However, his playing time diminished significantly in the last campaign under manager Daniel Farke, who preferred Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow, leaving Meslier without a single first-team appearance.

Meslier’s Role and Stack’s Concerns

Meslier’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium is intended to provide backup for established goalkeepers David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. He made his debut for Arsenal in a pre-season friendly against Girona earlier this month. This move, however, is expected to lead to young goalkeeper Tommy Setford being sent out on loan before the transfer deadline, a prospect that has reportedly displeased Stack.

Speaking on the transfer, Stack voiced his bewilderment. “Look, he’s experienced, but it’s highly unlikely that you would use him,” Stack stated. “My question is, is there not another goalkeeper at Arsenal Football Club that’s capable of that? What are they doing at the club that they’re not producing any goalies? They just keep signing goalies. At what point is there going to be an Arsenal goalkeeper that’s going to, not even break through, but I’m talking about being a number three.”

Stack further questioned Meslier’s motivation for joining as a third-choice goalkeeper at his age, suggesting the move might indicate a lack of ambition. “I question him, I really do question the goalkeeper,” he added. “The reason I say that is that he’s got Premier League experience, he’s played countless games in the Premier League, he’s got bundles of experience, been at Leeds for I don’t know how many years. He’s played loads of games, and maybe he doesn’t have that burning desire to go and play games and put himself under pressure. Maybe that’s what he’s after. But I’m just surprised with someone of Meslier’s quality that he’s decided to almost chuck the towel in and be a number three.”

Broader Transfer Activity and Title Aspirations

Meslier’s acquisition is part of a broader transfer strategy by Arsenal this summer. The club also made Piero Hincapie’s loan move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent and signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. Despite these additions, Arsenal continues to be linked with further signings in the left-wing and centre-back positions.

Despite the club’s ongoing transfer business, Stack remains confident in Arsenal’s prospects for the upcoming season, predicting they will successfully defend their league title. “Absolutely, Arsenal will win it,” Stack asserted. “I think Arsenal will be buzzing after last year, and think it’s a situation now where it’s basically the monkey off their back. They will be going into the season absolutely buzzing, and with the signing of Guimaraes and probably more to come between now and the start of the season, I think they will definitely strengthen.”

Stack acknowledged potential challenges, particularly concerning player fatigue towards the end of the season, especially given the demands of domestic competitions, the Champions League, and the proximity of a summer World Cup. “The only concern would be how fatigued some of the players might be after Christmas in the crunch end of the season, when there are so many games in the league, domestic competitions and the Champions League, especially after a summer World Cup,” he noted.

He emphasized the importance of squad depth and effective rotation to manage player workload. “Rotating the squad is going to be key this season, so stopping players getting fatigued and looking tired just requires a big enough squad to make the changes and rotate players effectively. Just keep freshening it up.”

Ultimately, Stack believes Arsenal has the strength to secure the title, though he anticipates a close contest. “I fancy Arsenal to go and win it, but I think that it will be a close-run race with Man City, I think City will be close behind them.”

Conclusion

The acquisition of Illan Meslier has sparked debate among former players, with Graham Stack questioning the strategic rationale behind the move and Meslier’s personal ambition. While the goalkeeper’s experience is acknowledged, Stack’s comments highlight concerns about squad development and the potential impact on emerging talent within the club. Nevertheless, Stack maintains a strong belief in Arsenal’s ability to compete for and win the Premier League title, contingent on effective squad management and rotation throughout a demanding season.
