Kingsley Park, the state-of-the-art training complex operated by Johnston Racing, offers a glimpse into a world of meticulous horsemanship and cutting-edge facilities. Now in his fourth year as the sole trainer on the license, Charlie Johnston, who took over from his father Mark in 2023, presides over a sprawling 300-acre estate in Wensleydale, Yorkshire. This purpose-built facility represents the culmination of three decades of dedication by his parents, who began their training journey with just five horses on a beach in Lincolnshire.

The tranquil setting of Kingsley Park, nestled in a picturesque valley, provides an idyllic environment for racehorses. Unlike the potential chaos of more urban training centers, Charlie Johnston highlights the significant advantage of having exclusive access to a variety of gallops. “It’s such a tranquil and relaxed environment for horses to train,” he notes, expressing gratitude for the facilities he has inherited. This serene atmosphere is conducive to optimal performance and well-being for the equine athletes.

State-of-the-Art Facilities at Kingsley Park

The infrastructure at Kingsley Park is designed to support every aspect of a racehorse’s training and recovery. Among the most impressive features is the dedicated equine gymnasium, often referred to as the ‘horse gym’. This facility boasts a treadmill and a swimming pool, alongside a water walker – a less common but highly effective piece of equipment in British racing yards.

The water walker, a circular system with individual compartments, allows horses to walk in water up to near shoulder height. This serves as a crucial form of physical therapy, aiding in rehabilitation and conditioning. While the presence of Mark Johnston’s aircraft hangar, housing two planes, might be less appealing to some visitors, it undeniably streamlines travel logistics for the training team, significantly reducing transit times for horses and staff.

Veterinary Expertise: A Core Advantage

A unique strength of Johnston Racing lies in its deep-rooted veterinary expertise. Charlie Johnston himself holds a degree in veterinary science from Glasgow University, a qualification that significantly enhances his capabilities as a trainer. “I was always going to train,” Charlie explains, “but I was keen to go to university. Maybe there was a bit of laziness by doing the same thing as Dad did, but I needed to find a degree which helped the end goal of training.”

This academic background allows for informed and constructive dialogue regarding the horses’ health and treatment. “We have two full-time vets in-house, in addition to me and Dad,” Charlie states. “They’d be nearly the first people I speak to in the morning and the last people I speak to at night. We’re in a constant dialogue about the horses and the veterinary degree means I can have a constructive discussion about what to do next.” This integrated approach ensures that the horses receive the highest standard of care, with veterinary considerations at the forefront of training decisions.

Navigating the Legacy and Future of Training

Taking over the training license from a figure as successful as Mark Johnston presented a significant challenge. Charlie acknowledges the inherent pressure but emphasizes his determination to maintain and build upon the established standards of excellence. “I can’t say I wake up every day feeling pressure, but I have a determination to not take any backward steps,” he says. “Maintaining those standards was going to be a monumental achievement, let alone building on them.”

Charlie’s early life was steeped in the world of racing, growing up around legendary horses such as Mister Baileys, Double Trigger, and Attraction. He recalls vivid memories, including Double Trigger’s third Goodwood Cup victory and the anticipation surrounding Attraction’s wins in the 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes. While he observed these events from a young age, his involvement was initially as a spectator.

The Analytical Approach to Training Management

Transitioning from observation to active management, Charlie now thrives on the planning and analytical aspects of training. “I like the planning,” he explains. “I’m quite analytic and mathematical as a personality so I like to plan the list in an evening.” He describes a collaborative process with his assistant trainer, Hayley, where he refines the established framework, aiming for the yard to operate with precision.

The demanding nature of the profession is not lost on him. “It can be relentless and I can’t help but feel guilty if I take any time off,” he admits. “It’s very much 365 days a year, but none of it should have come as a surprise to me, given I saw it for the first 30 years of my life.” This dedication, combined with the exceptional facilities and veterinary expertise at Kingsley Park, positions Charlie Johnston to continue the Johnston Racing legacy with confidence and a clear vision for the future.
