Musician Björk delivered a special DJ set during a unique rave event in Iceland, timed to coincide with the recent total solar eclipse. The one-day festival, named Echolalia, took place on August 12th in Viðistaðatún, Hafnarfjörður, a location near the capital city of Reykjavik.

A Celestial Spectacle and Musical Gathering

The Echolalia festival was strategically held within the narrow band where the total solar eclipse was visible. This astronomical event marked the first total solar eclipse to be seen in Iceland since 1954, adding a layer of profound natural wonder to the musical performances. The festival’s name also echoes Björk’s ongoing exhibition, ‘Echolalia,’ which is currently featured at the National Gallery of Iceland.

The event featured a curated lineup of electronic artists and performers. Alongside Björk’s highly anticipated DJ set, attendees were treated to performances by Arca, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, 33EMYBW, Sideproject, and Ronja Jóhannsdóttir. Arca’s performance notably occurred during the precise moment of totality, when the moon completely obscured the sun, casting the festival grounds into darkness for just over a minute.

Björk’s Performance Amidst Totality

Following the moment of totality, Björk took to the DJ decks at approximately 5:50 PM local time. She performed for an hour, concluding her set as the eclipse drew to a close. During her performance, Björk was observed in a distinctive, balloon-like outfit, dancing energetically behind the turntables. Her eclectic DJ set included a diverse range of tracks, showcasing her broad musical taste and appreciation for electronic music.

Notable tracks played by Björk included:

  • ‘Jaque’ by Marina Herlop
  • ‘El Alma Que Te Trajo’ by Arca
  • ‘If We Meet Again’ by Kelela
  • ‘Down To The Essence (Mun Sing Remix)’ by Machine Girl
  • A Conrad Taylor remix of ‘Berghain’, a collaboration with Rosalía and Yves Tumor

The ‘Echolalia’ Exhibition and Björk’s Artistic Vision

The festival’s connection to Björk’s ‘Echolalia’ exhibition at the National Gallery of Iceland highlights a multifaceted artistic exploration. The exhibition itself comprises three large-scale audiovisual installations. Two of these installations are dedicated to reimagining tracks from her 2022 album, ‘Fossora’ – specifically ‘Ancestress’ and ‘Sorrowful Soil.’ These pieces were composed in memory of her late mother, adding a deeply personal dimension to the exhibition.

The third installation within the ‘Echolalia’ exhibition offers a preview of an unreleased track titled ‘Nerve Bloom.’ This track is anticipated to be featured on Björk’s next album, which is slated for release in 2027. This glimpse into her future work underscores her continuous evolution as an artist.

Recent Artistic Endeavors and Personal Reflections

Björk’s performance at the Echolalia festival follows a series of notable recent activities. Earlier in the year, she joined forces with Rosalía to perform their collaboration ‘Berghain’ at the 2026 BRIT Awards. Additionally, she shared the concert film from her ‘Cornucopia’ tour, offering fans a visual and auditory experience of her live performances.

Her artistic reach also extends into the realm of gaming, as she is contributing music to the forthcoming sci-fi multiplayer game SEED. These diverse projects demonstrate Björk’s enduring creativity and her willingness to explore various artistic mediums.

In past reflections on her relationship with her homeland and its social scenes, Björk has expressed a preference for a more rural lifestyle. She has stated that while she enjoys visiting cities for cultural experiences like clubbing, galleries, and concerts, her inclination is to return to a more secluded environment. This perspective offers insight into her artistic process and her connection to nature, which often influences her work.

A Unique Intersection of Nature and Music

The solar eclipse rave organized by Björk represents a unique fusion of a rare natural phenomenon with cutting-edge electronic music. The event provided attendees with an unforgettable experience, combining the awe-inspiring spectacle of a total solar eclipse with a vibrant, forward-thinking musical lineup. The choice of location and the timing with the eclipse created an atmosphere that was both otherworldly and deeply connected to the natural world, reflecting Björk’s own artistic sensibilities.

The Echolalia festival, culminating in Björk’s DJ set under the darkened skies, served as a powerful reminder of the profound connections between art, nature, and human experience. It was an event that transcended a typical concert, offering a moment of collective wonder and artistic expression against the backdrop of a spectacular celestial event.
