A British newlywed couple, Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, tragically lost their lives alongside their pilot in a devastating helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos. The incident occurred on Monday evening, casting a shadow over the popular Cyclades destination.

Tragic Accident on Sifnos

The helicopter, reportedly a Canadian Bell 206, crashed into a hillside near a heliport around 6:00 PM local time. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage captured the harrowing moments before impact, showing the aircraft spinning uncontrollably as it rapidly lost altitude. The ensuing fireball and debris scattered across the arid landscape painted a grim picture of the accident’s severity.

Local authorities, including firefighters and a specialized rescue team, were quickly dispatched to the scene. Manolis Fountoulakis, the deputy mayor of Sifnos, described the wreckage as a “shapeless mass,” with the charred remains of the victims discovered within and near the impact site. The Greek fire service confirmed that the crash triggered an alarm that was heard across the island.

Victims Identified

The couple, believed to be in their early thirties and residing in London, were reportedly on their honeymoon when the fatal accident occurred. The pilot, identified as Giorgos Raikos, was a retired Greek Air Force officer with extensive flying experience, including piloting military Chinook helicopters. Local reports indicate he was married with three children.

The couple had reportedly hired a private air taxi service for their honeymoon excursion. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though some residents reported hearing a loud, unusual noise from the aircraft prior to the incident, likening it to that of military aircraft.

Investigation Underway

The National Organisation for the Investigation of Air and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety (EODASAAM) has commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The Greek Ministry of Transport is overseeing the inquiry.

The Foreign Office stated that it is in communication with the relevant local authorities and is actively gathering further information. Consular support is being offered to the families affected by this devastating event.

Sifnos: A Popular Destination

Sifnos, part of the Cyclades island group, is renowned for its picturesque sandy beaches and the iconic white Chrysopigi Monastery. It is a favored destination for tourists, particularly during the summer months. The island’s mayor, Maria Nadali, expressed the community’s shock and grief, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with emergency services to manage the aftermath of the incident.

No homes were impacted by the crash, and no other casualties were reported. The helicopter was understood to have taken off from a helipad in the Tholos area shortly before the accident.

Recent Aviation Incidents in Greece

This tragic event follows another aviation incident in Greece earlier this month, where a Greek and a Dane were killed in a mid-air helicopter collision while fighting wildfires near Athens. In that separate incident, a British pilot, Andrew Hutchinson, miraculously survived a similar crash.

Conclusion

The crash on Sifnos serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with aviation. As investigations continue, the focus remains on understanding the cause of the accident and providing support to the grieving families of Alexander Cromie, Marie Ebert, and Giorgos Raikos. The island community and authorities are united in their efforts to come to terms with this shocking event.
