Matthew Johnson, once widely known as “Britain’s Sickest Child,” has spoken out about his harrowing childhood, where he was subjected to fabricated illnesses by his mother, Lisa Hayden-Johnson. Now a healthy 25-year-old, Matthew, alongside his sister Laura, is sharing his story in a new documentary, detailing the profound impact of his mother’s actions and his journey to recovery.

A Childhood Defined by Deception

For years, the public and medical professionals believed Matthew was suffering from a multitude of severe conditions, including diabetes, cerebral palsy, and cystic fibrosis. He was reportedly allergic to nearly all foods, requiring a feeding tube and constant oxygen support, and had undergone numerous surgeries before the age of six. His mother, Lisa Hayden-Johnson, presented herself as a devoted caregiver, a narrative that garnered significant public sympathy and media attention. Their story was featured in newspapers and magazines, and they even received a bravery award from Queen Camilla (then Duchess of Cornwall) and met then-Prime Minister Tony Blair.

However, this carefully constructed reality began to unravel as medical professionals grew suspicious. Despite hundreds of medical consultations and numerous procedures, tests for Matthew’s alleged conditions often yielded no conclusive results. Concerns were raised about the consistency of his symptoms and the mother’s behavior. Dr. Stella Imong, a pediatrician who treated Matthew, noted that while most premature babies recover quickly, Matthew was a near-constant presence in the hospital, requiring a dedicated consultant, Dr. John Broomhall.

The Revelation of Fabricated Illness

The truth emerged when Lisa Hayden-Johnson was diagnosed with Munchausen by Proxy, now known as Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII). This psychological disorder involves a caregiver, typically a mother, exaggerating, fabricating, or inducing illness in a child to gain attention and sympathy. Investigations by Devon and Cornwall Police, alongside health professionals and social workers, uncovered evidence of Lisa’s deception. Medical records revealed she had provided false blood sugar readings for Matthew’s supposed diabetes and had misrepresented advice from other hospitals. A search of their home uncovered large quantities of unused medication and glucose powder, believed to have been used to falsify urine samples.

The extent of the deception was significant, with estimates suggesting Lisa Hayden-Johnson may have claimed around £200,000 in benefits based on Matthew’s fabricated illnesses. Her husband, Christopher, was reportedly unaware of the extent of his wife’s actions, believing she was genuinely caring for their son.

Legal Consequences and Immediate Aftermath

In 2010, Lisa Hayden-Johnson was convicted of child cruelty and perverting the course of justice, leading to her being labeled “Britain’s most evil mother” by some media outlets. She was sentenced to three years and three months in prison, serving 19 months before her release in 2011. Following her arrest, Matthew was placed in foster care. Under the care of medical professionals, he was gradually weaned off all medications and began to thrive, demonstrating that he was, in fact, a healthy child.

The separation from his mother and the upheaval of moving from their home in Brixham, Devon, to Sheffield with his father and sister was a difficult adjustment. Laura, now 27, recalled the shock of learning the truth and the anger directed at social workers initially, followed by the profound heartbreak of her father. Matthew, now 25, described the move as the start of a new life, allowing him to finally experience being a normal, healthy child.

Reconciliation and Lingering Impact

In the years following her release, Lisa Hayden-Johnson sought contact with her children. Matthew, then aged 11 or 12, initially reconnected with his mother, driven by a desire to see her. Laura also moved back in with her mother for a period, finding initial happiness in their reunion. However, Laura eventually experienced her mother exhibiting concerning behaviors, including feigning illness and regressing to childlike states, which led Laura to distance herself again.

Both Matthew and Laura have now chosen to cut ties with their mother, citing her continued refusal to acknowledge her wrongdoing and her lack of remorse. Matthew expressed that while he has forgiven her, he recognizes the need for distance to protect their own well-being. Laura shares mixed emotions of anger and sympathy, acknowledging her mother’s potential mental health struggles but emphasizing the need for accountability.

A Future of Health and Hope

Despite the profound trauma of his upbringing, Matthew Johnson has built a stable and fulfilling life. He works in administration, lives independently, and has cultivated a strong support network of friends and family. Laura is also doing well, working in childcare, a field she is passionate about, and living with her partner. Both siblings express a sense of peace and contentment, having moved beyond the shadow of their mother’s actions.

Their story, highlighted in the Channel 4 documentary “Love You To Death,” serves as a powerful testament to resilience and the possibility of overcoming even the most damaging forms of childhood abuse. Matthew and Laura’s decision to share their experiences aims to raise awareness about Fabricated or Induced Illness and offer hope to others who have suffered similar ordeals.

The documentary “Love You To Death” airs on Channel 4.
