Crystal Palace has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea to loan defender Axel Disasi for the upcoming season. This move comes after Chelsea’s efforts to permanently sell the French international failed to materialize at their desired valuation.

Disasi’s Chelsea Stint and Loan Move

Axel Disasi joined Chelsea from Monaco in 2023 for a transfer fee exceeding £38 million. He was a prominent figure under former manager Mauricio Pochettino. However, with the arrival of Enzo Maresca, Disasi was sidelined and has not featured for the first team in over 18 months. This situation has led to two previous loan spells, first with Aston Villa and then with West Ham United.

The latest reports from Fabrizio Romano indicate that Chelsea and Crystal Palace have finalized terms for a loan agreement. Disasi is expected to undergo his medical examination on Friday, just before Crystal Palace begins their Premier League campaign with an away fixture against Everton. Under the terms of the reported deal, Crystal Palace will cover the 28-year-old’s wages and pay a modest loan fee, estimated to be around £5 million, to Chelsea. Crucially, the agreement is understood to include no option or obligation for Palace to purchase the player permanently.

Financial Disappointment for Chelsea

While Chelsea has successfully moved an unwanted player off their books, the financial outcome falls short of their initial expectations. Earlier in the summer transfer window, speculation suggested that Chelsea aimed to secure a sale of Disasi for approximately £25 million. The current loan arrangement, therefore, represents a significant reduction in the potential return on their initial investment.

Crystal Palace’s Defensive Reinforcement

The loan acquisition of Disasi by Crystal Palace follows their own significant defensive transfer, with the club having recently signed Maxence Lacroix from Chelsea for a reported £52 million. New Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage acknowledged the club’s need for defensive reinforcements during a pre-match press conference ahead of their season opener.

Sage stated, “Yes, we need a player in this department. We need a player with a lot of games, if possible in the Premier League, because we need players, but we need a leader. That’s why we need to wait a little bit to find a good one.”

Addressing the speculation surrounding Disasi, Sage commented, “He is a player from Chelsea, it’s difficult for me to speak about a player of another club, but I hear the same noise as you.” He indicated that the club was targeting one or two more signings and emphasized the importance of acquiring the right players rather than rushing into deals.

Crystal Palace’s Transfer Strategy and Player Retention

Maxence Lacroix is currently the most notable sale from Crystal Palace this summer. Manager Pierre Sage has expressed confidence that no other key players will depart Selhurst Park before the transfer deadline. This includes highly-rated England midfielder Adam Wharton, who has reportedly attracted interest from Manchester City and is valued at around £100 million.

Sage was firm on retaining Wharton, stating, “Now it’s not the moment to do that [sell him]. He is able to play at a big club here or everywhere in Europe, but one year with us, one year with a new dynamic will be good for him. We need him, that’s why I think he will stay with us.” This stance highlights Crystal Palace’s ambition to build stability and retain their core talent for the upcoming season.

Looking Ahead

The loan move for Axel Disasi provides Chelsea with an opportunity to move a player out of their squad while freeing up wages. For Crystal Palace, it offers a chance to bolster their defense with an experienced international player, albeit on a temporary basis. The success of the deal will depend on Disasi’s performance and integration into Sage’s system at Selhurst Park.
