Essendon’s challenging AFL season has concluded with the club’s first wooden spoon in its history, following a dramatic 10-point loss to Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium. The final score saw the Power triumph 16.9 (105) to 14.11 (95) in a match that saw the lead change hands multiple times in a tense final quarter.

A Season to Forget for Essendon

The defeat cemented Essendon’s position at the bottom of the ladder with a 2-21 record for the year. This outcome marks the worst season in the club’s long and storied AFL/VFL history, surpassing even the 2016 season where the team, impacted by sanctions, managed three wins. The Bombers also recorded only two victories in the 1933 VFL campaign, though that season comprised fewer home-and-away rounds.

With the club set to appoint a new full-time coach in the coming days, the focus shifts to rebuilding and ushering in a new era. Interim coach Dean Solomon will hand over the reins, leaving the new permanent leader with the significant task of revitalizing a team that struggled for consistency throughout the year.

Nate Caddy’s Standout Performance

Despite the overall disappointing season, emerging forward Nate Caddy delivered a career-best performance against Port Adelaide, kicking six goals. His impressive haul provided a glimmer of hope and showcased his potential for the future. Caddy’s strong showing in attack, however, was ultimately not enough to secure a victory for the Bombers.

Other notable contributors for Essendon included Angus Clarke, who kicked three goals, and Will Setterfield and Archie Roberts, who both registered 27 disposals. Captain Andrew McGrath marked his 200th game with 25 disposals, but the team’s efforts fell short.

Port Adelaide’s Strong Finish

Port Adelaide, playing in a dead rubber match, showed resilience and determination. Emerging forward Mitch Georgiades was a key figure for the Power, matching Caddy’s impact with five goals. His performance included the opening goal of the match and the crucial sealer late in the final term.

The Power established an early lead, holding a 22-point advantage before halftime. Despite Essendon’s third-quarter surge, where they outscored Port significantly, the Power regained control in the final term. Key contributions from Mitch Zadow and Jack Whitlock, who each kicked two goals in the second half, alongside strong performances from Jase Burgoyne (30 disposals, two goals) and veteran Ollie Wines (27 disposals, one goal), were vital to Port’s victory.

Late Drama and Shifting Momentum

The final quarter was a tense affair, with the lead changing hands five times. Essendon’s former captain, Zach Merrett, who recorded a game-high 32 disposals amidst ongoing speculation about his future with the club, appeared to have kicked the match-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining. Merrett had been denied a trade to Hawthorn the previous year, adding a layer of intrigue to his performance and potential future movements.

However, Port Adelaide responded swiftly. Georgiades calmly converted a set shot to equalize, and then played a role in setting up Whitlock for the game-sealing goal. Port’s ability to score freely from center bounces in the dying minutes proved decisive.

Looking Ahead for Essendon

The conclusion of the 2023 season marks a low point for Essendon Football Club. The focus now turns to the upcoming coaching appointment and the strategic decisions required to rebuild the playing list and regain competitiveness. The club faces the significant challenge of learning from this difficult season and implementing changes to ensure a more successful future, aiming to avoid a repeat of this historic wooden spoon.
