Clinton Daniels, a member of the SAAS Special Operation Team, described the extensive treatment the driver required at the scene, including blood transfusions, before being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. “Both have significant injuries from the impact of the bus and the crumpling of the bus onto the patient themselves,” Daniels stated. “The driver was extensively trapped through being compressed through his lower limbs.”

Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) firefighters were instrumental in the rescue effort. MFS commander Simon Kirkmoe highlighted the technical difficulty of the operation. “The driver presented more of a complex removal,” Kirkmoe explained. “We had to use some techniques to drag the bus backwards off the pylon to then use some hand tools and hydraulic tools to actually remove the steering column in the front off the bus off of those lower limbs to enable them to be removed.”
Kirkmoe noted that freeing the passenger took approximately half an hour, while the driver’s extrication required over an hour. A total of 19 firefighters, including a specialist technical rescue team, were involved in the complex operation.
“There is a lot of damage to the front of the bus and it would be one of the more significant accidents we’ve been to with busses in recent times,” Kirkmoe added.
While the driver and one passenger were trapped by their lower limbs, approximately four other passengers managed to exit the bus without assistance.

Following the collision, a structural engineer was called to assess the integrity of the rail bridge. This assessment is a necessary step before train services can resume on the line. “We are just ensuring that the structural integrity of the bridge, which shouldn’t be a problem, but we are just ensuring that an engineer looks at that prior to letting trains back on the line,” Kirkmoe confirmed.
South Australia Police reported that Commercial Road was closed in both directions around the crash site. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes to avoid significant delays.
