New Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has revealed that manager Mikel Arteta has temporarily restricted him from taking set-piece duties, a role he frequently performed at his previous club. The Brazilian international, who joined Arsenal in a significant £75 million transfer, was a key figure for Newcastle United, often tasked with delivering corners and free-kicks under Eddie Howe. However, this responsibility will not immediately transfer to his new North London environment.

Adapting to Arsenal’s Set-Piece Strategy

Arsenal boasted the Premier League’s most potent attack from set plays last season, and Guimaraes is still in the process of integrating into the team’s established routines. Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast, Guimaraes acknowledged the learning curve involved. “I’m still getting used to [Arsenal’s set piece routines],” he stated. “There’s a lot [to learn]. We’re training a lot, almost every day for set pieces.”

When questioned about whether Arteta has permitted him to take corners yet, the 28-year-old responded with a smile, “Not yet, not yet.” This indicates a measured approach from the Arsenal management as Guimaraes familiarizes himself with the team’s tactical framework.

Guimaraes’ Set-Piece Prowess

Guimaraes has cultivated a reputation as one of the league’s most dangerous deliverers from dead-ball situations. His ability was notably showcased last season when he scored directly from a corner during Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Burnley. This demonstrated skill highlights the potential he brings, though Arsenal’s own highly effective set-piece system requires a different kind of integration.

Arsenal’s Set-Piece Dominance

In recent seasons, Arsenal has developed a sophisticated and meticulously choreographed approach to corners and free-kicks, establishing themselves as one of the world’s most formidable teams in this area. This tactical strength contributed significantly to their goal tally, with the Gunners scoring 25 league goals from set pieces (excluding penalties) last season. Furthermore, the synergy between midfielders is evident, as 10 of Declan Rice’s 20 Premier League assists for Arsenal originated from corners or free kicks.

Given this established system and the success it has yielded, it is understandable that Guimaraes faces a period of adaptation before being entrusted with primary set-piece responsibilities. His arrival is intended to bolster an already strong unit, rather than immediately overhaul it.

Debut and Injury Setback

Guimaraes made his Arsenal debut in the Community Shield, contributing to the team’s 3-0 triumph over Manchester City. However, he was subsequently left out of the squad for the Premier League fixture against Coventry City, which Arsenal also won 3-0. Manager Mikel Arteta explained that Guimaraes had sustained a minor groin injury during training and the club opted for a cautious approach.

“He had a slight tension in his groin, he hasn’t done a pre-season,” Arteta commented prior to the match. “He had only four or five days before that game [Community Shield]. It is a lot of new stuff for him as well, and we need to take it bit-by-bit.” This statement underscores the club’s intention to manage his integration carefully, considering both his recent arrival and the minor physical issue.

Anticipation for Midfield Partnership

Since his high-profile transfer at the beginning of August, Arsenal supporters have eagerly anticipated the prospect of Guimaraes forming a dynamic partnership with Declan Rice in midfield. Guimaraes himself appears equally enthusiastic about the potential collaboration, having experienced firsthand the challenges of playing against the England international during their time as Premier League rivals.

“Rice has a little bit of everything, he’s so good with the ball but he defends like a lion… his presence in the midfield is unbelievable,” Guimaraes remarked. “It was very difficult playing against him and now I can finally play with him. I hope we can be very successful together.” This mutual respect and excitement suggest a strong foundation for a successful midfield pairing that could significantly enhance Arsenal’s performance in the upcoming season.

Conclusion

Bruno Guimaraes’ temporary restriction from set-piece duties at Arsenal is a testament to the club’s well-established tactical structure and their cautious approach to integrating new signings. While his proven ability from dead-ball situations is acknowledged, the priority is his adaptation to the team’s system and ensuring his full fitness. The anticipation surrounding his partnership with Declan Rice, coupled with his own positive sentiments, points towards a promising future for the Brazilian midfielder at the Emirates Stadium.
