Fred Sirieix, known for his role in the popular television series First Dates, recently recounted a harrowing experience during the filming of his new Channel 4 show, Fred’s Ultimate Hotels. While on a bushwalk in South Africa, Sirieix and his group found themselves in a perilous situation, caught between a large elephant and two rhinos. The incident underscored the critical role of experienced guides in navigating the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters.
A Close Call in the South African Bush
The alarming event occurred while Sirieix was filming in South Africa, staying at The Royal Madikwe Lodge, a luxury establishment situated near the border of South Africa and Botswana. The lodge offers guests a variety of wildlife and hospitality experiences, including guided safaris. It was during one of these guided walking safaris that the group’s safety was suddenly jeopardized.
Sirieix described the moment as intensely frightening. “We went on a bush walk, and basically what happened is we got sandwiched between one elephant and two rhinos,” he revealed. “It’s not a good place to be, let me tell you that.” The presenter emphasized that such situations highlight the profound importance of the expertise and knowledge possessed by safari guides when dealing with potentially dangerous wild animals.
The Crucial Role of Safari Guides
Explaining the dynamics of wildlife behavior, Sirieix noted that animals like elephants and rhinos are highly territorial. They can exhibit aggressive responses when they perceive a threat or when humans intrude upon their space. “They don’t want you there, the animals, they don’t think that you should be there and they are very territorial,” he stated. “So if you’re in front of the water or there or whatever, they just charge.”
In this critical moment, the group’s safari guide, Ernie, proved instrumental in de-escalating the situation. Sirieix credited Ernie’s quick thinking and training for ensuring their safety. “Ernie came into his own, the guide, because it’s all about their training and knowing how to read an animal,” Sirieix explained.
Ernie’s Heroic Intervention
Remarkably, Ernie managed to deter the formidable animals without resorting to any form of weaponry. Sirieix recounted how the guide used his presence and actions to create a safe distance. “So he managed to scare them. Without using a gun or anything, just his arms and whatever he was doing, and they left,” he recalled.
This life-saving intervention by Ernie deeply impacted Sirieix, leading him to select the guide for his Hospitality Hero Award in the new series. The award is designed to recognize individuals in the hospitality industry who make a significant and lasting positive impression on guests through their exceptional service and dedication.
A Moment of Emotional Recognition
Reflecting on the experience and Ernie’s subsequent recognition, Sirieix became visibly emotional. “Ernie in South Africa – the guy who saved my life in the bushwalk, where we had the near miss,” he said, his voice filled with feeling. “He was crying like a baby. He’s a mountain of a man, strong like an elephant, the heart of an elephant, he was crying, big tears, it was beautiful.” This poignant moment underscored the profound human connection and gratitude that can arise from shared challenging experiences.
