The group stage draw for the upcoming Champions League season has set the stage for a series of high-profile clashes, with Arsenal set to face a formidable challenge from Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, and Manchester City drawn against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. The draw, conducted in Monaco, also revealed the paths for other English clubs including Liverpool, Manchester United, and Aston Villa.

Arsenal’s Challenging Path

Arsenal, aiming to improve on their Champions League final defeat last season, has been handed a demanding draw in the new league format. Manager Mikel Arteta’s side will need to secure crucial points against a competitive set of opponents to advance to the knockout stages. Their fixtures include a trip to face Real Madrid, featuring stars like Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, and a visit to Bayern Munich, where they will encounter former Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

Beyond these marquee matchups, Arsenal’s schedule also includes games against Borussia Dortmund, Real Betis, Lille, and Napoli. More accessible fixtures are expected against Sabah of Azerbaijan and Slavia Prague. The new league format sees 36 teams participating, with the top 24 advancing to the knockout play-offs, while the bottom 12 are eliminated.

Manchester City’s Tough Draw

Manchester City, under the guidance of Enzo Maresca for the first time in a decade without Pep Guardiola at the helm, also faces a daunting draw. The Citizens will host Paris Saint-Germain and travel to the Nou Camp to play Barcelona. Their group also features Portuguese clubs Sporting Lisbon and Porto, alongside Napoli and RB Leipzig.

Completing City’s challenging schedule are AEK Athens and Lens. This draw presents a significant test for City as they begin their quest to retain the Champions League title.

Manchester United’s Return

Manchester United makes a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence, marking their 300th game in the competition. Their campaign includes a highly anticipated rematch against Bayern Munich, recalling the iconic 1999 final. They will also face AS Roma, a team they famously defeated 7-1 in 2007, at Old Trafford.

United’s away fixtures will take them to Sporting Lisbon, Atletico Madrid, and Cesc Fabregas’ Como. Other opponents in their group include Villarreal and RB Leipzig, with Sabah rounding out their schedule.

Liverpool’s Favorable Draw

Liverpool appears to have received a more manageable draw compared to their English counterparts. The Reds are set to host Atletico Madrid and will also play Porto, Villarreal, and Lens at home. Their away fixtures include trips to Inter Milan, Club Brugge, Fenerbahce, and LASK.

Aston Villa’s European Debut

Europa League champions Aston Villa will make their Champions League debut with a challenging set of fixtures. They are scheduled to host Paris Saint-Germain and travel to Barcelona, mirroring some of City’s opponents. Their group also includes Borussia Dortmund.

Villa’s other opponents are Fenerbahce, Viking, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, and Slavia Prague. This draw marks a significant step up for Unai Emery’s side as they compete at Europe’s elite level.

Mason Greenwood’s Potential Return to England

The draw also brings the possibility of Mason Greenwood playing on English soil for the first time since January 2022. Now with Turkish club Fenerbahce, Greenwood could face Shakhtar Donetsk, who are temporarily playing their home matches at Stamford Bridge due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This scenario would also see Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon playing at Chelsea’s home ground.

Tournament Format and Knockout Stages

The Champions League has adopted a new league stage format for this season. A total of 36 teams will compete, with the top eight automatically qualifying for the Round of 16. Teams finishing between ninth and 24th place will enter a knockout play-off round in February, while those from 25th to 36th will be eliminated from European competition.

The Round of 16 matches are scheduled to commence in March. Meanwhile, other English clubs like Bournemouth, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, and Brighton and Hove Albion will learn their Europa League and Europa Conference League opponents in separate draws.

Notable Encounters and Returns

The draw has set up several compelling narratives. Cesc Fabregas will return to Barcelona with Como, and Jose Mourinho will head back to Roma, where his tenure ended in 2024. Celtic fans might reflect on their elimination by LASK, who overcame a significant deficit in the play-offs and will now face Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The league stage promises intense competition, with teams vying for a place in the knockout rounds. The new format aims to provide more matches and greater unpredictability throughout the early stages of the tournament.
